How do you set default WLM to open up in less than full desktop?
How do you set default WLM to open up in less than full desktop?
Hi, Dicky.
As with most Windows applications: First right-click on the WLM shortcut,
click Properties, and be sure that the Run box says "Normal window" (not
either Minimized or Maximized). Then start WLM and use the mouse to size it
as you wish. (If it is already Maximized, you'll need to click Restore to
be able to drag the borders.) Then close the WLM window. Windows should
remember this size; start WLM again to be sure that it does.
Windows remembers the size that WLM was using the last time it was closed.
So if you stretch the open WLM window - either intentionally or
accidentally - that new size is what Windows will remember for next time and
you'll have to adjust it again.

Click on the Restore button, if the WLM window is Maximized, then place the
cursor on any corner of the of the WLM window until a double-arrow appears.
When the double-arrow appears, click and drag it to the desired windows size
and after doing that, press and hold the Ctrl key while closing the WLM
window.
I have my WLM window to always open Maximized, I think it's better that way,
more content appears on the screen.

R.C.
None of that is working for me either in XPsp3.
The Run: Normal has been ignored since
Build 14.0.8050.1202 came out. That was annoying
enough. It meant having to doubleclick in the Title bar
every time the application opened.
Fortunately the message windows in that version at least
remembered where they were and how big they were
when I closed them. So, that made the problem with
main application window a bit more tolerable.
Now, however, still with the same build, after I have been
playing with resolution and DPI setting, I can't get the
message windows to open in normal mode either and
have to doubleclick their title bars too. At least the
size and position is retained but this maximization instead
of normal mode is a real nuisance. I blame the OS for it
but I don't want to give up the improvements in readability
I have given myself by reverting to my previous resolution
and DPI setting.
One quirk I intend to start taking advantage of is that
Run: Minimized is not ignored and then I can Restore
the initial launch of WLMail perhaps with less irritation
than by doubleclicking on the Title bar (or pressing Alt-Space,R).
I don't have WLMail installed in Vista so I can't compare
what that OS does with the same scenario.

Hi, Robert.
Well, I must admit that I seldom run WLM (or most other programs) in other
than Maximized windows, so my experience with smaller windows is limited.
My current monitor is a 17" LCD, the largest I've ever had. (I started in
1977 with the 12" B&W with 16 lines of 64 characters on the original TRS-80,
so 17" seems large to me. ;^} )
But when I tested it just now, it worked as advertised.
First, I set closed WLM. Then I set Properties to Normal window and started
WLM again. it opened Maximized, of course, because that was the previous
size. I clicked Restore down and it resized to about 1/4 of the screen.
Then I used the X to close WLM. When I started WLM again, it was the
1/4-screen size. I didn't test further, but just closed WLM, reset
Properties to Maximized, and started WLM again - and it opened Maximized.
As it says in my Sig, I'm running WLM 0206 in Win7 7000.

Try it; you'll like it. <eg>
In my case, there is some horrible dimming that XP does
to maximized and Fullscreen mode windows
that makes it essential that I don't use maximized
windows. However, I actually prefer using overlapping
windows when I have to switch between them a lot
as WLMail and to a lesser extent OE force me to.

Or, you just saw an instance of the first bug we are complaining about. <eg>

Ok. That's interesting. Thanks. In fact, it reminds me of something
which also used to bug me--I think when XPsp2 came out--
that if I ever made my normal mode window too big, I found that
XP was maximally sizing it. So now it looks like they are instituting
a similar undocumented "feechur" that if your normal mode window
closes at some threshhold of size and shape it will maximize it for you
the next time you open it, thus at least preserving your preferred size
for normal mode, which is quite different from the previous interference
I mentioned.

I don't think that 1/4 size window would be terribly useful but YMMV. ; )
I suspect because of my new screen resolution and DPI setting that
I have pushed my window sizes over the limit for the above (hypothesised)
"feechur". But I don't want to make them any smaller because they
are still a careful balance of overlapping position and size so I can use
toolbar buttons in each. Unfortunately with these damn text only buttons
I lose a lot of horizonal positioning as the DPI enlarges things.
BTW it's going to take some adjustment to get used to that
Run: Minimized quirk I mentioned. I started WLMail...
and waited and waited; then pressed Alt-Tab and said Oops! ; )
