Can someone please tell me is there anyway to save or archive messages in
Windows Live Mail? If so, can they be imported back to Windows Live at a
later date if need be?

There's no archive function..
Just use File - Export - Messages - WLM
and save to an empty folder.
Then look to see if the messages are there, and delete the messages in WLM.

You can import them later via File - Import - Messages - WLM
