| | Check for new messages every...... Windows Live Mail 14v. ------ Check for new messages every ( x ) minutes One MVP suggested that it should be at least 20 min. ( if I remember correctly ). I'd like to know the reason of " minimum " 20 min. What is the downside of less than that ? t-4-2 |

| | Re: Check for new messages every...... It's a suggested minimum. Personally I recommend a minimum of 15 minutes. Some people have tried settings as low as 1 minute. That can lead to conflicts if a send/receive/sync operation takes longer than that. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "t-4-2" <dhuang1@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:OXdghidnJHA.504@xxxxxx Quote: > Windows Live Mail 14v. > ------ Check for new messages every ( x ) minutes > One MVP suggested that it should be at least 20 min. | | Re: Check for new messages every...... The recommendation I use is 5 minutes or more. Shorter intervals have a possibility of 'hanging' the mailbox on the server. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "t-4-2" <dhuang1@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:OXdghidnJHA.504@xxxxxx Quote: > Windows Live Mail 14v. > ------ Check for new messages every ( x ) minutes > One MVP suggested that it should be at least 20 min. What is the downside of > less than that ? the client will probably barf on either the long download, or the next poll. You should adjust the polling time to be equal to however long the largest email takes to download, plus a couple of extra minutes for a cushion. So it is actually not easy to recommend a minimum. I use a 30 minute interval, but I am polling around ten POP3 accounts in a polling cycle, and want to be sure that the client doesn't "trip over its own feet". So to speak. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| | RE: Check for new messages every...... Are you using POP or IMAP? I don't remember where I read that for IMAP, it's better to set the time to something long (30+) so that there's no server timeout. I use POP (3 accounts) and have tried checking for new emails at 1 minute but that was too short, so I switched to 10 minutes and haven't checked it. | | Message checking options What about not checking at all and having a program do the checking? https://www.poppeeper.com/ There may be other programs that do the same. But to have your computer checking hundreds of times a day seems like kind of a waste. Another option is to have an alert go to an IM client. Not sure if many POP/IMAP email companies offer this. Most of us have email that is either crucial or non-crucial. Non-crucial stuff can be checked every few hours and the crucial stuff we want to be alerted instantly. I don't use IM services much but sure appreciate their speed. Integrating the best of both worlds seems ideal. |
