WlMail startup problem - Having to manually end Wlmail.exe

Hi
Since updating to the latest version, I have been having intermittent
problems with starting up windows live mail. I have since discovered that
this is related to the wlmail.exe process not ending when I exit Windows live
mail - the less than satisfactory solution being having to manually ending
all instances of wlmail.exe processes through control manager. I initially
thought the problem was related to antivirus software but it seems that that
was a red herring. Is there a more permanent solution to this problem? Thanks

Re: WlMail startup problem - Having to manually end Wlmail.exe

You might try the following:
0. Control Shift Esc to access Task Manager and 'End Process' on all occurrences of wlmail.exe(look on the Processes tab). Close
Task Manager
1. Open WLM
2. Ensure that Tools/Options/Send/Upload larger images to the web is checked
3. Verify that no messages remain in the Outbox, if desired empty each accounts Deleted Items and Junk Mail folders
4. Force a manual compact(Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance
- change the counter to 1(Compact the database on shutdown every 1 runs)
- Click Close, then Apply
5. Click File/Work Offline
6. Click File/Exit
7. WLM will prompt to compact, let it compact, wait until complete
8. Open WLM, reset the compact counter to your preferred frequency and re-enable Work Online.

Re: WlMail startup problem - Having to manually end Wlmail.exe

Thanks - have tried what you suggested but no luck. I still have to
periodically manually end the process wlmail.exe to get wlmail to open.

Re: WlMail startup problem - Having to manually end Wlmail.exe

....winston is not a member of any Microsoft "team". This is 100% a
volunteer forum. If any Microsoft employee does post in here well then they
are playing hookie from their real work. ...winston knows a lot about these
products, but he is just as much here to learn as any of us. If you want to
call that "grasping at straws" well then.

You can maybe find more "official" help on Microsoft's (moderated) support
forums or pay for phone support but they won't know any more than ...winston
does...

There is no point in "admitting" that WLM has bugs. Heh. If you are not
interested in fighting bugs well then several release quality clients are
available, both mail and news.

Cheers,

Earle

Re: WlMail startup problem - Having to manually end Wlmail.exe

No, I did not state that the problem was a redundant av issue. I did state that email scanning is redundant to the autoprotect
feature in a resident AV client.
- If comprehending that simple difference is escapable, then it is also unlikely that implementing a valid solution if one does
become available will also present challenges.

Fyi....There is no team here. This is a public forum of volunteers...Many novices in these forums regardless of actual computer
experience make the same mistake.

As noted in another thread, it is incumbent upon 'you' to contact WLM support....though if your unprofessional approach(exemplified
in this forum) is any indication of how to pursue and rectify a problem, I really wish you good luck!!

Re: WLMail startup problem - Having to manually end Wlmail.exe

The WLMail team have kindly advised us that they have identified one shutdown bug in the current version of WLMail.

See:
news:%23j7L1nuhJHA.3648@xxxxxx
news:uxSpI$zhJHA.4912@xxxxxx

If your Blocked or Safe Senders list contains an address with an illegal character (such as ~ or |), WLMail will fail to shutdown correctly.

So check your Blocked and Safe Senders lists (easier through the WLHotmail web UI) for email addresses with with illegal characters, and remove them from the list, or clear the lists completely to be sure.

The list of *legal* non-alphanumerical characters is:
_
'
-
+
=
&

There are also restrictions on the domain portion of email addresses - it can't start or end with a dot for example.

Domains longer than 256 characters, and addresses longer than 512 characters are considered illegal.

However, I have experienced very occasional faulty shutdowns of WLMail which are not easily reproducible and did not involve the above bug.

Faulty shutdown has occurred for me after my newsgroup server failed to connect (often without a time out warning), but I am not always able to end the wlmail.exe process with Windows Task Manager (thus, a reboot is required).

It has also occurred for me when I have left a Message Window open when I closed WLMail - despite then closing the Message Window, wlmail.exe remained as a process (or two processes).

It has also occurred when I have closed WLMail whilst the sync spooler has been running - despite then closing the Spooler dialog box, wlmail.exe remained as a process.

It has occurred after enabling Newsgroup Communities Support Features then closed WLMail before these Features were fully synchronised.

It has occurred after I subscribed to a Newsgroup then closed WLMail before it had finished indexing the downloaded headers and message bodies.

One poster observed that his shutdown problems vanished after deleting the unused Microsoft Communities News account (the only one installed), but it may suffice to uncheck the option 'Include this account when checking for new messages' at Tools->Accounts...->News [section]->Microsoft Communities [or other News Account]->General [tab], if it is not in use.

However, many people using Newsgroups are not experiencing shutdown problems.

So in essence, the current version of WLMail is very sensitive to faulty shutdown, which can occur in a variety of scenarios for some, and not at all for others.

If the bug addressed at the start of this post is not the cause of your shutdown problems, then I am afraid you will need to try and pinpoint the cause yourself, including experimenting with settings, and eliminating possible interference from third party software or a faulty installation of WLEssentials.

Sadly, because the main contributors to this newsgroup are not experiencing regular faulty shutdowns of WLMail, we have not been able to isolate the problem and so provide a list of definitive solutions or workarounds to this problem.

Re: WLMail startup problem - Having to manually end Wlmail.exe

Hi

Thanks for all your replies. There does indeed appear to be a shut down bug
- and in my case it is not related to illegal characters in my
contact/blocked lists nor to newsgroups being used.

I thank you for your reply. i was under the impression that this was a
forum supported by the Microsoft Live Team to help users such as myself,
rather than volunteers.

i will attempt to use my unprofessional approach with the WLM support.
