Storage folders and Imported folders

I've had a problem with Windows Live Mail since I started using it. I even
uninstalled it and tried again but I continue to have the same problem.
Under Storage folders, I get Imported Folder with a number in parenthases
afterwards ie (325), they multiply like rabbits and I'm up to over 300....now
do I stop this from hapening? Even deleting them is a nightmare because I
have to do it one folder at a time.

Re: Storage folders and Imported folders

Did you install WLM after using a prior email client(e.g. Outlook Express, Windows Mail, etc).
Upon installation WLM will seek and if found attempt to import a prior email clients messages and place them in the Storage
folders/Imported Folder.

Re: Storage folders and Imported folders

Windows Mail was pre-installed but yes I did install WLM after the fact - so
your saying if I get rid of all the previous messages in Windows Mail that
will solve the problem? Actually I switched to WLM because Windows Mail had
almost the same problem only worded differently, it says 'recovered messages'
instead of 'imported messages' I dont' think I can uninstall WM since it's
part of Vista, correct? "

Re: Storage folders and Imported folders

Hi, Liz.

WM is an integral part of Vista, just as OE was an integral part of prior
Windows versions. WLM is not an integral part of any OS; it must be
installed later, now usually as a part of the Windows Live Essentials suite.
(During the WLM beta, it was often installed without other Live components.)
WLM and WM can - and usually do - exist side by side; we can use either or
both in the same Vista installation. If we stop using WM, it just sits
quietly on our hard drive.
Quote:

> your saying if I get rid of all the previous messages in Windows Mail that

No. WM and WLM keep entirely separate Message Stores. Deleting one will
have no effect on the other.

The usual practice is to install WLM and - since WM is already installed -
let WLM Import all of the messages from WM's Message Store to that point.
(As Winston already said.) These come into WLM's Imported Messages folder.
(WM MAY also have an Imported Messages folder, since Vista, including WM, is
often installed on a machine that previously had WinXP installed, including
OE and the OE Store Folders, and WM's installation will automatically offer
to Import the messages from OE. So we end up with a multi-generation
rollup: from OE to WM to WLM.) (Outlook may get involved, too, but let's
not get in over our heads here!)

Recovered Items are different from Imported Messages. Sometimes WLM gets
aborted - intentionally or accidentally - before it has a chance to "put
away its toys" and do all its closing housekeeping chores, including
indexing all its messages, The next time WLM starts, it has to do something
with these un-indexed items, so it creates a Recovered Items folder and puts
them there, perhaps also creating subfolders in Recovered items. Given
enough computer idle time, WLM will eventually get all these Recovered items
indexed and moved into the proper folders (and delete the many duplicate
messages). But if it gets aborted again or otherwise interrupted in the
midst of this process, the Message Store and indexes may get hopelessly
tangled. :>( It can take a looong time for the mess to get straightened
out; so long that sometimes we are tempted to delete the store, re-import
older messages, and try to download newer messages again.

Re: Storage folders and Imported folders

I don't know...since I am only going by information provided by you(each post gives us a little more background)

.....but with prior information presented in this thread, and RC's explanation, you should be able to determine if the messages in
WLM Storage folders/Imported folder are the same messages present in Vista Windows Mail folders and determine the value of those
Windows Mail messages still residing in Windows Mail. If important export the messages in Windows Mail to a jump drive or other
folder for safekeeping(they can be dragged/dropped into WLM later if needed or opened by double clicking, then delete the messages
in WM.

Re: Storage folders and Imported folders

My problem isn't that it's importing messages,it's that it 'tries' to import
and comes up blank. I said I had over 300 folders, it's actually over 1,000
- each one has a number. I wish I could attach a screen shot!
Each folder is just that, a 'folder' no messages at all! I can't delete
them except individually which does me more good because it just produces
more!

Re: Storage folders and Imported folders

This is a new computer with Vista 64 bit on it - well new 4 months ago. It
came with WM which is what I used until it started making folders (not the
same ones as WLM) so I installed WLM and immediately these empty folders
started being created by the programme. I gave up on WLM, uninstalled it,
reinstalled it and the same problem exiss. These folders are directly under
the Storage Folder header and I have to wade to the bottom to get to any of
my mail that I moved to a folder that I made so it's quite a nuisance and I'd
love to know how to stop this from happening.

Re: Storage folders and Imported folders

Zero Messages, over 1,000 empty folders:-) I still don't know how to fix
this. I didn't import any messages into WLM, I started from scratch.
