Hi, Liz.
> Windows Mail was pre-installed but yes I did install WLM after the fact WM is an integral part of Vista, just as OE was an integral part of prior
Windows versions. WLM is not an integral part of any OS; it must be
installed later, now usually as a part of the Windows Live Essentials suite.
(During the WLM beta, it was often installed without other Live components.)
WLM and WM can - and usually do - exist side by side; we can use either or
both in the same Vista installation. If we stop using WM, it just sits
quietly on our hard drive.

have no effect on the other.
The usual practice is to install WLM and - since WM is already installed -
let WLM Import all of the messages from WM's Message Store to that point.
(As Winston already said.) These come into WLM's Imported Messages folder.
(WM MAY also have an Imported Messages folder, since Vista, including WM, is
often installed on a machine that previously had WinXP installed, including
OE and the OE Store Folders, and WM's installation will automatically offer
to Import the messages from OE. So we end up with a multi-generation
rollup: from OE to WM to WLM.) (Outlook may get involved, too, but let's
not get in over our heads here!)
Recovered Items are different from Imported Messages. Sometimes WLM gets
aborted - intentionally or accidentally - before it has a chance to "put
away its toys" and do all its closing housekeeping chores, including
indexing all its messages, The next time WLM starts, it has to do something
with these un-indexed items, so it creates a Recovered Items folder and puts
them there, perhaps also creating subfolders in Recovered items. Given
enough computer idle time, WLM will eventually get all these Recovered items
indexed and moved into the proper folders (and delete the many duplicate
messages). But if it gets aborted again or otherwise interrupted in the
midst of this process, the Message Store and indexes may get hopelessly
tangled. :>( It can take a looong time for the mess to get straightened
out; so long that sometimes we are tempted to delete the store, re-import
older messages, and try to download newer messages again.
