    Re: outlook express

You can't totally delete OE as it is part of IE6 and your OS. You can make
the Inbox.dbx Read Only and OE will not even open, but that may not fix your
    problem.

The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100
closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be and even if
    you are not using OE.

There is a growing number of programs and actions that may be causing this
after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?

IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
    Windows {Desktop} Search
Window Live Mail (even if it was removed)
    Mailwasher
    Nero plug-in(s)

Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry
    count.

Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if
they were running when you installed SP3.

In the case of Windows Desktop Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell
    it to stop indexing OE.

Windows {Desktop} Search. Set Desktop Search Options:
    http://www.microsoft.com/australia/w...h/options.mspx

In Windows {Desktop} Search: Control Panel | Indexing Options. Click: Modify
and clear the check box for Outlook Express.

In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.
    ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero...oScout_Enu.pdf

In the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add
    these file types:

    ..eml, .dbx & .nws

The WLM Inbox is separate from Outlook Express, so delete away. You can't
really delete OE, as it is part of the operating system, but you can disable
it in Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components.

    Bruce,
How does WLM affect OE's registry counter?
    - by opening an *.eml file if WLM is installed or its indexing of WLM's message store(it doesn't index anything not in WLM's
    message store)

    - if removed are you suggesting that left over registry entries are involved either by presence or OE accessing those entries ?

    Re: outlook express

    Others have addressed OE.

In WLM, ***do not** remove an email account without first backing up your messages and account settings(link provided below) or
copying messages to a user folder created in WLM's Storage Folders.

Removal of an account in WLM will not only remove the account including its associated folders and messages from the WLM interface
but **will also delete** the account's folders and messages locally stored on your hard drive. Poof! Gone.
    - Note: When removing an account in WLM, you will receive one single prompt asking to confirm deletion.

Messages copied to a user created folder in WLM's Storage Folders are not deleted from WLM or your hard drive when an account is
    removed.

    Re: outlook express

WLM doesn't cause an issue with OE, the other list of programs do. The #1
offender is Windows Search and it continuously increases the registry count
by indexing OE. Like the OP, you don't even need to be using OE to keep
    getting the compact prompt.

Obviously that was a canned reply and if someone /is/ using OE, accessing
eml files will increase the count in that case.

I see nothing about just deleting the inboxes in oe. Could I delete the user
made inboxes but leave the local inbox? Nothing ever goes to this. I could
keep the oe and just delete the user made inboxes

You can delete any dbx files you want. If you ever open OE, it will recreate
the default folders, but not the user created folders. None of this has
anything to do with getting the prompt to compact though.
