| | Password incompatability between Windows Live and MSN (POP 3)? I have attempted (multiple times) to update my Windows Live Hotmail sign-in password to a stronger variant, which works fine online and initially with the Windows Live Mail desktop application for my existing POP 3 MSN account. At some point (in the subsequent 24 to 48 hours after changing the password) the MSN mail server refuses to accept either the new password or the original password when attempting to sync using the desktop application. The only way I have been able to resolve this is to reset all (Windows Live and desktop MSN mail account) passwords back to the original MSN password. I would like to implement a stronger password, but not sure how to solve the problem. Any suggestions would be greatley appreciated. |

| | Re: Password incompatability between Windows Live and MSN (POP 3)? Depending on your mail client. Some do not like symbols, i.e. / ( ) * etc. Some accept a few and reject a few. The best bet is not to use symbols at all. t-4-2 "Dave Pratt" <DavePratt@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:4ECB47B1-825C-47E7-AB65-AC10BE5D549C@xxxxxx Quote: > I have attempted (multiple times) to update my Windows Live Hotmail > sign-in > password to a stronger variant, which works fine online and initially with > the Windows Live Mail desktop application for my existing POP 3 MSN > account. > At some point (in the subsequent 24 to 48 hours after changing the > password) > the MSN mail server refuses to accept either the new password or the > original > password when attempting to sync using the desktop application. The mail client doesn't care. :-) The mail provider sets the rules as to which characters are acceptable for password use. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "t-4-2" <dhuang1@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23wH1CpNyJHA.1416@xxxxxx Quote: > Depending on your mail client. | | Re: Password incompatability between Windows Live and MSN (POP 3)? Thanks to both you, Gary, and t-4-2 for your advice which caused me to recheck the password rules for Windows Live. My mistake was trying to generate a 20-character password when the maximum allowed is 16. As you each pointed out, the mail client sets the rules. Windows Live rules apply to hotmail and MSN mail accounts. Windows Live does permit symbols.
