There are many different types of file that use the .dat extension,
including several Windows system files, so it's impossible to say
what app you need. Since this is a newsgroup dedicated to WLMail,
the only reason I can think of why you've posted here is that you've
received a message with an attachment with a .dat extension. If the
    filename is winmail.dat, see here:
    http://email.about.com/od/outlooktips/qt/et121705.htm
Otherwise, you'd better tell us a bit more about the file you need
    to open - and why.

An attachment was sent to me........ UNKNOWN_PAREMTER_VALUE.dat
I can't open it. However, another recipient was able to open it by using MS
Office 2007. I don't have that.... too cheap to buy.

    Re: .dat file

I've found a simple way. Change the file name from .dat to .pps. That's all.

    Re: .dat file

That would be a power point file.

Chances are the file was forwarded through multiple mail systems. For
example, when an AOL user forwards an attachment to a Hotmail user and
the Hotmail user then forwards it on, it may arrive without any file
extension and then it may default to a DAT file.

    Re: .dat file

See Michael's response...and don't in the future assume that all *.dat files are *.pps files or that *.dat extension should be
associated with Powerpoint(both are accidents waiting to happen).
