Windows Live Mail flags contact list messages as suspicious

I'm using WLM v 12.0.1606 on WinXP SP3. Recently some messages from people in
my contacts list are flagged as suspicious. As others indicated, clicking the
'Allow Sender' link does nothing. Why would some messages from my Mom or
other contacts be flagged as suspicious? How do I prevent this? And, why
won't the 'Allow Sender' link allow the sender?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Windows Live Mail flags contact list messages as suspicious

What are the contents of the message?
Just because the message appears to be from your Mom is it really from your
Mom? Have you checked with your Mom?

I'm sticking my neck out. Are those flagged messages consisting of
attachments ?
Your WLM is of previous version.
The latest build (14.0.8064.0206) of WLMail 2009 was released just this
month, February 2009. It, along with the other parts of Live Essentials, is
available here:

RE: Windows Live Mail flags contact list messages as suspicious

Thanks for your quick response. It was only text in my Mom's message, & yes,
I'm absolutely certain it was from her. The other message I recently received
from a friend in my contacts list which contained some text & a TIFF file.

That is the so-called anti-phishing feature. To turn it off:
Tools, Safety Options, Phishing, uncheck the first box.
Just be aware that messages containing spam or malware can appear to
come from trusted contacts.

Has to do with SPF, or the MSFT implementation of it. I've only noticed it
in Windows Live Hotmail accounts, and with email address domains which cause
Hotmail to "fail" the message for a failure in the SPF checks.

Re: Windows Live Mail flags contact list messages as suspicious

Hi, Debbie.

Did your Mom send you a link to a website? Look at Tools | Safety
Options... On the Phishing tab, there is a box (I think it is checked by
default) to "Protect my Inbox from messages with potential Phishing links."
As it says in the WLM Help file, "Deceptive links in e-mail messages are
often used as part of phishing scams, or to transmit viruses." WLM can't
evaluate the destinations of those links, so it highlights the message (in a
hard-to-ignore Red) to warn you that it doesn't vouch for the safety of the
websites where you will end up if you click those links. Clicking "Allow
Sender" seems to do nothing, but it does prevent WLM from moving the message
to Junk and blocking the Sender's future messages.

For more, click the Help-file link on that Phishing tab.

Re: Windows Live Mail flags contact list messages as suspicious

Hi, again, Debbie.

I received a few new emails today with the red Phishing warning. They were
a thread from other MVPs discussing some fishy websites, including the URLs,
which probably triggered the warning. I paid a bit more attention as I
clicked the Allow Sender and saw that WLM made a couple of changes in the
Message List. It deleted the little red shield before the message, and
changed the message entry from red to the normal gray (for Read).

Once allowed, the message does not turn red again when re-selected.
