Backing up Windows Live Mail

Hello, I know this must be a repeated question, but I couldn't find it
anywhere in this forum.

What files and folders and registry keys should I save in order to back up
all Windows Live Mail's configurations?

I am subscribed to quite a few newsgroups, I have my e-mails accounts all
configured, my e-mail messages and all that. But they're all in Vista
Ultimate (installed on another partition) and now I'm currently using
Windows 7 and would like to import all these configs.

Please help.

Re: Backing up Windows Live Mail

Did you try Windows Easy Transfer? You could also have upgraded your
Ultimate to Windows 7 after making an image backup.

Re: Backing up Windows Live Mail

Email and newsgroup messages are stored under your Users folder.
C:\Users\<yourlogin>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

Export all of the email/newsgroup account settings...
Tools - Accounts - click on account - Export
do this for each account.

Message rules are stored in the registry, export this key...
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Rules]

Re: Backing up Windows Live Mail

The easiest way is to use a free third party backup/restore program.
See http://www.staticbackup.com/windows-live-mail-backup/
and the second section on the downloads page:
http://www.staticbackup.com/downloads.htm

I've used it myself several times, quite successfully.

StaticBackup does work well for your messages, but it doesn't transfer your
addressbook (contacts).

And as I discovered the hard way over the weekend, the Windows Live Mail
contacts export doesn't work well either. I did a reformat and install of
W7 to go from 32 to 64-bit, and when I imported my saved contacts from Live
Mail, I learned that it didn't include any of the groups I'd created and also
only brought one e-mail address per person. So for all of the people where I
had both work and personal e-mail addresses saved, all of that is now gone.
:-(

If a Microsofty reads this, PLEASE go back into the Contacts export/import
routine and make it work properly before October when we all begin
reformatting and restoring on the new Windows 7. The old WAB file in OE
always worked like a champ. This new CSV method is not only painfully slow
(even on a killer machine), it's also incomplete.

You don't need to muck about exporting contacts if you sign in with
a Live ID while using WLMail. Contacts are associated with that Live
ID and can be accessed on the web at people.live.com. If you sign in
to your newly-installed WLMail with the same Live ID you used in the
old one, all your contacts should be there precisely as they were
under your old installation, groups ('categories') and all. One of
the great advantages of signing in.

Thanks, Noel.

While using the cloud to keep things like that tidy, I guess I'm not ready
to upload my personal contact file into Microsoft's server. With the many
well-publicized Hotmail breaches, I just don't have a warm fuzzy feeling
about it.

I guess I can start digging around and figure out where the contacts are
kept and see about doing it that way.

In WLM, Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance, Store Folder, ...
The mail is in Windows Live Mail. The Contacts are in Windows Live
Contacts.

Only if you haven't moved your Store folder, Ron. The Contacts
folder stays put and grows in the appdata folder and can't be moved.
