Live Mail quit working

I have been using Vista x64 for a few months now with very few problems. This week Windows Mail quit working. I get this error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop-server', Server: 'pop-server.columbus.rr.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I recently added Windows Live Messenger, but no other changes. I don't know if the mail problem started at the same time as adding Messenger.

I use Norton 360 and COMODO Internet Security, and have had no problems for several months until this started this week.

Today I added Live mail and get the same error:

Unable to send or receive messages for the pop-server account. The connection to the server has failed.

Server: 'pop-server.columbus.rr.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10061

Any help would be greatly appreciated by my wife...... (and me)

I can get mail through the webmail server, so the account is working fine.

Disable the email scanning . Uninstall and re-install your AV without the email
integration(scanning). This applies to all security and AV apps that are set to scan
in and outgoing emails This scanning feature can work for month or yrs and this
issue will always come about at one point

Peter,
Thanks for the advice. I've removed Norton 360 and everything is working again. I didn't re-install Norton yet because I've been thinking about going to Windows 7. I guess while I'm tinkering, I'll go to Win7 and then check my options for AV.

Thanks again.
