WLM does not always completely close on exit

I'm running on a Vista Ultimate sp1 64-bit system with WLM Version 2009
(Build 14.0.8064.0206). I normally only reboot my system every couple of
weeks or so and close down WLM each evening. However, usually after the 2nd
or 3rd night, WLM fails to exit completely and leaves an icon in the system
tray. It doesn't appear to be doing anything I can see. I can leave it until
the next day and it is still there. The only way I can force it to close is
by ending the process in Task Manager or rebooting.

I have read of others having this issue and I do not have the reputed
illegal characters in my Blocked Senders or Safe Senders lists. So there is
something else afoot, other than that issue.

Any other ideas?

Re: WLM does not always completely close on exit

When WLM fails to end process..you've found the only way to shut it down(Task Manager)

Other reasons WLM stays resident..
- AntiVirus or malware scanning programs
- shutting down WLM when a send/receive is in process

I rarely see WLM 2009 hang on Vista U Sp1 or Sp2(can't recall the last occurrence)..though I do completely shutdown or restart on a
higher frequency than you.

Re: WLM does not always completely close on exit

I started up WLM yesterday and it exited just fine last night. Started up
this morning and now it will not exit, just sits in the tray. I can click on
the tray icon and open it back up, but I cannot exit. If I r-click the tray
icon and select exit, it does nothing. The only thing I can do at this point
is reboot system or end process in TM. The latter always causes WLM to open
up and say something about not showing the current message, because of
abnormal shutdown.

This was a brand new machine, at the end of April, and it has always done
this since installing WLM at that time. I imported my message store from my
old XP system running WLM. WLM never did this on XP, but it used to
invariably error out on exit, with about the same frequency as it now hangs.

I also have a laptop running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and it has always failed
to exit, too. (this is more than a year old)

It may have something to do with 64-bit. Are you running 64 or 32 bit Vista?

How many opens and closes of WLMail would that represent?
What is your compaction interval set to?

Disable automatic compaction or set it to 1 and expect a prompt
each time. Also, I think it may help not to be connected with your
Live ID when you disconnect. However, when I set Work Offline
to try to effect that without actually disabling Sign In, WLMail crashes.
YMMV.

Good luck

That's one way to get out of WLM but IMHO a bit drastic.

After writing that I tried it also after rejecting Sign In
and that case also resulted in a crash.

If that means that you see the crash from using Work Offline too
that is comforting for me. ; )

Re: WLM does not always completely close on exit

Control Shift Esc(Task Manager)
- end task for all o/s(XP, Vista, Win7, 32 or 64bit)

Re: WLM does not always completely close on exit

Works fine here in all combinations of counter at 1 or disabled, work offline or online, file exit or click on x etc in three
different systems
- (note: Nod32 and Windows Firewall present on Vista, NSW and Windows Firewall present on XP, MSE on another XP, no AV on Win7)

Re: WLM does not always completely close on exit

I'm sorry, but your response is not helpful! I know how to open TM (Task
Manager), and to end task. I already explained that when using the end
process in TM, that the next time I open WLM it is treated as if it crashed.
A reboot does not cause that, but is more inconvenient.

You didn't answer whether you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of
Vista.

I was looking for a probable cause and more viable solution.

Automatic compaction is set to the default of 100. I will try setting this
to 1 and see if that changes anything.
