| | how to empty the cache On xp computers- it doesn't empty the cache . It comes back saying there is another Windows Mail open and cannot perform the function. I see this happen on all my clients running xp. it doesn't do this on vista nor windows 7 you know a way to get the cache to empty? I have it to compact the data base on shutdown after 24 runs but it still sits at 12mbs. When it goes to do it it comes back with the above message. I use process explorer and I notice that it does shut down Is there anyway in windows explorer in Program Files where this sits I could empty the cache. I have it at 12mbs and when trying to empty it, it comes back to 12mbs robin -- Do You Fee Like A Hostage To Your Computer? R&D Internet Associates is who you need. |

| | Re: how to empty the cache Cache ? Or are you referring to compaction ? Since your referencing XP, the window('comes back saying etc..")is a Windows Live Mail prompt, not a Windows Mail prompt. Compaction can only be done via the WLM interface. Try the following to force a compaction on exit: Temporarily disable your AV and any third party programs that monitor or scan email Open WLM Disable all automatic send/retrieve options Set the compaction counter to 1 File/Work Offline File/Exit If it compacts, let us know. -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "robinb" <robinbk9@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:E50E4B9C-2B2D-4A1D-BA00-9F628DD458B1@xxxxxx Quote: > On xp computers- it doesn't empty the cache . | | Re: how to empty the cache If WLM has been running awhile it will often have a problem when it tries to compact. You need to start WLM and then immediately shut it down before doing a lot of activity. You can do that by setting the compact count to 1 when you want to compact. What I do instead is run a little REG file when I want to force a compact. Instead of setting the interval to 1, I set the number of opens to 100. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ; Trigger Compacting in Windows Live Mail (WLM) on next close ; Sets number of WLM closes since last compact to 100 (hex 64) [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail] "Compact Check Count"=dword:00000064 ; Assumes Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance, Compact on xxx runs ; is set to 100 (hex 64) or less [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\News] "Cache Compact Runs"=dword:00000064 -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "robinb" <robinbk9@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:E50E4B9C-2B2D-4A1D-BA00-9F628DD458B1@xxxxxx Quote: > On xp computers- it doesn't empty the cache . | | Re: how to empty the cache I'm not quite sure what you're talking about here. Which 'cache' are you trying to empty? Windows Mail does not run on XP, so I doubt you are seeing what you say 'it comes back saying'. Which cache are you setting to 12MB? If you could be a bit more precise about what you're trying to do, the greater the likelihood that someone could help you. -- Noel "robinb" <robinbk9@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:E50E4B9C-2B2D-4A1D-BA00-9F628DD458B1@xxxxxx Quote: > On xp computers- it doesn't empty the cache .
