| | What is Windows Live Mail - MSN? Hotmail? Apologies if this is totally the wrong group but I've had this posted in the Outlook ng for about a week without a single reply so I'm hoping someone here can help. I have to say that I don't use Windows Live Mail, MSN, Hotmail or Outlook so I'm rather confused about it all. Anyway, here's a "copy and paste" of the thread that I've had in the microsoft.public.outlook.general newsgroup: ****************************************** Asking for a friend who isn't exactly very technically minded so I apologise in advance for the lack of in-depth detail. Anyway, he has an MSN email address (along the lines of xxx.yyy@xxxxxx) and has always used a webmail interface to send/receive email instead of an email client like Outlook or Outlook Express. He now has a new mobile phone (that's "cell phone" for our US cousins )) that can synchronizecontacts/calendar functions between itself and Outlook, so he wants to start using Outlook 2003 as his email client with his xxx.yyy@xxxxxx account. So, first question is, can Outlook 2003 be used with an @msn.com email account? I've never used either of them so I don't know, but I would imagine the answer would be yes, and if so, that leads to the second question of what are the POP3 and SMTP server settings? Where would we even look to find out such info? And finally, I took a complete guess that the server info would be pop.msn.com and smtp.msn.com so, just as an experiment, tried to talk him through setting up a new email account in Outlook. Although I've never used it I thought that the navigation may be similar enough to Outlook Express, ie, Tools > Accounts > Mail > Add etc., etc., that we could work our way round. He apparently came to a point where he had a button "Add new email account" or something similar (again, I apologise for the lack of detail but he's 30 miles away from me) that was greyed out. Any ideas as to why he couldn't create a new account? Thanks in advance folks, Pete ************************************** |

You may have to login to MSN and setup pop access. -- Ron Sommer "Pete Zahut" <dont@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:LN-dnVWLS9g1iNvXnZ2dnUVZ8omdnZ2d@xxxxxx Quote: > Pete Zahut wrote: Quote: >> Apologies if this is totally the wrong group but I've had this posted >> in the Outlook ng for about a week without a single reply so I'm >> hoping someone here can help. | | Re: What is Windows Live Mail - MSN? Hotmail? Hello Pete, Outlook 2003 and 2007 can be used with an msn.com account Two options are available(pop3 and http using DeltaSync) for OL03/07 Hotmail and MSN Accounts POP3/SMTP Access http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com...90CA!422.entry or DeltaSync/Http protocol - DeltaSync replaces the older WebDAV protocol effective Sept 1. - In Outlook 2003 and 2007 to use the DeltaSync http protocol requires installing the Outlook Connector(an add-in) that will mirror the web based folders in a separate account structure in Outlook and independent from Outlooks default folders(Inbox, Sent, Outbox etc). Installation of the Outlook Connector will make the MSn web accounts Contacts and Calendar available, but separate and independent from Outlooks main Contacts and Calendar). Comments: Normally when a phone syncs with Outlook(not all phones do) it **only** syncs with the main Outlook Contacts and Calendar. It does not sync the web based Msn Calendar(now Live Calendar) or Contacts(now Live Contacts) nor does it sync with the Live Contacts and Calendar available through use of the Outlook Connector. If one chooses pop3, the only way to move the contacts from an Msn.com account to the main Outlook contacts is to export the contacts using the web interface(contacts.live.com, manage/export) to a *.csv file and then import those contacts into Outlooks main contacts(File/Import/Import from a file choosing the Csv-Comma Separated Values[Windows] option). Once imported, the phone would then have access after a sync with the contacts imported into Outlooks main Contacts. -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "Pete Zahut" <dont@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:vLidne5axfC8iNvXnZ2dnUVZ8g-dnZ2d@xxxxxx Quote: > > Anyway, he has an MSN email address (along the lines of xxx.yyy@xxxxxx) and > has always used a webmail interface to send/receive email instead of an > email client like Outlook or Outlook Express.
