Live Mail Contact List and program freezes

Help please with Windows Live Mail v12 used to access the company e-mail
system. (The LiveID option is not used).

If you send a message, or reply to messages with an additional recipient
added to the reply e-mail, the program freezes for 5 to 10 minutes before
the message finally goes. I've also noticed that the contacts all tend to
disappear from the contact list, then will mysteriously re-appear at some
later time, only to disappear again the next time the program is started .

I figured that maybe there was some corruption in the data, so after the
contact had re-appeared the other day, I exported them all to a CSV file,
then closed down WLM and deleted the contact sub folder, which was recreated
as an empty folder the next time I started the program and accessed the
Contact List.

I then tried to import the contacts from the CSV file overnight....... 15
hours later, and it's still working on importing the contacts.

I take it that this isn't normal behaviour. Does any one know for sure what
the problem is and if there's a fix for it?
Could it be the number of contacts in the contact list? Is 3,729 entries
considered to be a lot of contacts?

Re: Live Mail Contact List and program freezes

Hello David

1. Please remove all that confidentiality stuff from the foot of
your messages before posting.
2. The version of the program you're using is five months out of
date. There was a major change in the way WLMail handles contacts
between version 12 and the current version 14, available from
http://download.live.com . The update might solve your problems (or
introduce some entirely new ones, of course...)
3. Please check at Tools > Accounts whether you have any Contacts
Directory Accounts listed. I seem to remember that earlier versions
of the program had two or three of these installed by default, and
checking addresses against an American database that doesn't contain
them might take a long time. If your company e-mail system has an
LDAP server, you might find a way to use that for your contacts list
instead of WLMail's own. I've no experience of this, and I doubt
there is much, because WLMail is primarily intended for
non-corporate users. Some educational institutions are trying out
Microsoft mail solutions using IMAP and, possibly, LDAP, but again I
don't know how it's working.
4. I don't know why the CSV import is taking so long; again,
updating might help. One possible pitfall is with exported fields
that contain commas. I don't know whether this has been fixed, but
if, say, a Notes field contained a comma, this used to get construed
as a field separator in the CSV and thus foul it up. Have a quick
look at the CSV in Excel and see if there's anything funny about it.
5. Antivirus applications can cause havoc with the functioning of a
program like WLMail, and some (Norton, McAfee) are worse than
others. See if you can arrange for AV scanning of incoming and
outgoing mail can be disabled - this won't cause security problems
if reasonable 'safe surfing' procedures are followed.

No more suggestions at the moment. Good luck!
