Hiding Windows Live Mail Toolbar

I can hide the menu bar in Windows Live Mail but can I hide the toolbar which takes up precious screen space?

Incidentally, what a relief after all the trouble I had with Outlook Express 6 after installing Internet Explorer 8. And it is so similar to OE6 that I could kick myself for not installing it sooner!!!

I installed it, imported all my OE correspondence and already feel at home with it in a matter of just a couple of hours!

Brilliant BUT can I get rid of that toolbar?! The Menu Bar does a better job, as far as I am concerned. The Tool Bar just takes up precious space.

Why did you crosspost to OE General?

Re: Hiding Windows Live Mail Toolbar

Because I want to encourage OTHERS who are still using OE6 to switch over to Windows Live Mail.

I didn't think there would be any drawbacks in crossponsing on this occasion.

Sorry! I just thought that after the hassle I had with OE6 after installing
IE8, I'd encourage others to move on to WLMail!

Why are you so upset about the Toolbar? It's only a single line, same as
the Menu Bar. Are you sure you are not talking about what WLM calls the
"Message header (News)"? Many of us have complained about that, and the
current version is slightly thinner than the previous one. Look at View |
Layout if you're not sure what I'm talking about. We've also complained
that the Menu Bar (File, Edit, View, etc.) is hidden by default; you
apparently have already found how to turn it on. And they do different
things. There's no Tools on the Toolbar, and no Next Folder on the Menu
Bar.

The Toolbar provides a space to show convenient buttons, such as Reply group
and Next Unread and Sync everything... You have noticed that there are
several different Toolbars, haven't you? The one in Mail is not the same as
the one in News and neither is the same as the one in a Compose window. It
takes a little time to get each one organized the way I want them because
there are so many options, but now that they are all set up, they make my
mail and news reading much easier.

As you said, WLM's interface can be arranged to look very much like OE. But
don't be fooled; there are many differences "under the hood". The most
significant one isn't apparent unless you delve into the inner workings:
The database is now much different. OE keeps messages in a few "folders",
which really are files with the .dbx or .nws extension. If you got a
thousand emails from your Mom, they might all be in the Family.dbx folder.
If there was corruption anywhere in that folder, you would lose all the
messages. WLM keeps each email as a separate .eml file, so that thousand
messages would create a thousand .eml files; a corruption in one would cost
you just one message, not the whole thousand. Other differences flow from
this basic change; I'm not going to try to explain the whole thing here.
(Winston could do a much better job of that, anyhow.) Just recognize that
WLM is not as similar to OE as it appears on the surface.

One thing that hasn't changed much from OE is the many ways each of us can
customize WLM to make it fit ME and they way I want to work. There are SO
MANY things to explore under Tools | Options... ;<)

Re: Hiding Windows Live Mail Toolbar

Thanks for all the info, especially about the differences with OE. The Menu
Bar is a single line, as you say, but rather a thick one. And no, I am not
talking about the Message Header. I found out how to show or hide that
though I'll be damned if I remember it now. But not to worry. I'll find out
how, yet again.

To be honest I much prefer the Menu bar as opposed to a few space wasting
icons just for the popular tasks. At least with the Menu one gets a chance
to get to know the ins and outs of the program. Nothing wrong with a bit of
exploration.

Think how dull the world would be if we couldn't explore girlz !!!!!

Or vice versa, I mean girls exploring boyz. ;-)
