[Forwarded from MSN Discussion to Vista Mail, OE, and WLMail newsgroups for
greater exposure.]

Can any Windows Mail, OE, or WLMail user confirm that installing KB972260
(MS09-034) resolves the "IE8 attachment issue"?

Now will you admit it had nothing to do with having your antivirus
active while installing IE8? :-)

Re: IE8 Attachment Issue (was MSN Explorer/IE8 Attachment Issue) - update

Nope, at least not until I hear back from the IE Team (which is on my To Do
list). [1]

QED: Why did the majority of those who'd disabled all real-time protections
prior to installing IE8 not see the "attachment issue"?

QED: Are those zero-byte files still being created in %system%\Documents and
Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp folder after installing KB972260?

===============
[1] Compare this fix to the fix for the behavior described in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969938 (i.e., huge number of sites running
in Restricted Sites zone causing slow performance in IE8). This bug was
also addressed in a recent Cumulative Security Update (KB969897 IIRC).

Re: IE8 Attachment Issue (was MSN Explorer/IE8 Attachment Issue) - update

I currently have only one zero byte file (dated July 28), which is fewer
than I had several days ago when I had about 12. Neither number is
anywhere near the 64,000 (or so) that some had reported.

Re: IE8 Attachment Issue (was MSN Explorer/IE8 Attachment Issue) - update

Is it in that %system%\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp
folder?

Did you install KB972260 and KB972636 on 28 July or just the former?

Thanks for posting the reference!!

Indeed it seems that the "Cumulative Security Update for IE8 for Windows
Vista ... (KB972260)" might have included a fix which changes the way of
handling of WinMail attachments.

It seems that the way of creating/opening temporary files for WinMail
messages has been changed and the handling of attachments too.

IMHO it's too early for announcing "Bug killed".

But at present after all I could test, it seems to be the case.

Rainald.

AFAICS he hardly ever will admit that for many months he has been on a
totally wrong path {siiiigh}.
As I had explained (with valid prove) security-/AV-software never had
been an issue with the IE8-WinMail bug.

Where do I look to determine if it has been applied? I looked in the Control
Panel; the Program and Features applet. I clicked on "View installed
updates" at the top left. Should KB972260 be listed under Microsoft Windows?
If so then apparently it has not been applied to my system. I know there
were some critical updates this past week so I need to get over to Windows
Update and get the updates.
