Searching message text

Hi,

I'm trying to make Windows Desktop Search search the message text in Windows
Live Mail but I can't find a way to do so. I found a thread about it
(http://tinyurl.com/machtj), but unfortunately the OP didn't say what he
did/clicked on so that Windows Desktop Search searches the body text in WLM.

Where is the option so that when I search my messages in WLM, it searches
the body of the message and not just the subject.

Thanks,

Sterling

PS I went to the WLM folder location in WDS and all boxes are checked but
the latter still doesn't search the body text.

Re: Searching message text

I'll be honest, I've been using Windows 7 for so long I can't give XP
advice, but....In Windows 7, I go to the Start menu and search for Index. By
default, I believe that Windows 7 indexes the contents of WLM. XP may not.
Try looking up Index and see what you find and see whether you can add WLM
to be one of the indexed programs and see whether there are options to Index
the contents of the email files. Try Folder Options on the WLM email folder
as well.

I hope I may be pointing you in the right direction...

Michael

The following is what I wrote about WDS3.01 last year. Most of it
still applies, except that WS4 is no longer in beta. Since you call
it 'Windows Desktop Search', you probably still have WDS3.01 as I
do. It works perfectly; even though I have 515,000 files indexed, it
only takes a few seconds to track down any one of them using the
deskbar. Searching through my archive of this group (over 40,000
posts) for a particular post takes at most ten seconds with a two-
or three-word search term.

Re: Searching message text

Ildhund,

I use Microsoft Newsgroup's search bar and it can be crappy at times, so I
didn't see your post.

I'm using Windows Search 4 -- the latest version. In your linked to post,
steps 1-5 were defaulted. No change there, so I went ahead and reinstall both
Windows Search and WLM and now the former also searches the text in messages.

Thanks,

Sterling

Re: Searching message text

Hi Michael,

Yes I can add folders to Windows Search but the problem was that WS wasn't
searching the body of messages, just the subject.

Windows 7 is awesome! I can't wait to buy my new Windows 7 PC! :-)

Thanks for the assistance,

Sterling

"At times"?!

Good to hear it's working for you. There seems to be some bug in
WDS/WS on XP that causes it not to react to configuration changes if
they're performed in a particular order, so that a return to
defaults by re-installation is needed. I've never established what
that order has to be, though.

You'll notice that a 'Find a message' search is a two-phase
operation. First, it trawls through the database looking at header
lines, and then through the WS index looking at message bodies. You
have to be a bit patient; if you've spotted what you were looking
for during Phase 1 and select it, that selection will have moved by
the time Phase 2 is complete. This is only a problem in folders with
lots (= thousands) of messages.

Re: Searching message text

LOL Yes. Saying Microsoft Newsgroup's search bar can be "crappy at times" is
an understatement :-)

One thing that I don't like about WS is that if you try to uninstall it
after you've installed something else, it gives you a warning about those
installs not working properly.

You're right. The header search is much faster than step 2. Usually now I
just search by sender, if I know who sent me an email with the phrase I'm
looking for, and then look for the message like that.

Thanks again Noel.
