Gurus,
It seems that Windows Live Mail is nothing more than Outlook Express with a
different "skin". However, this is my observation after running it for only
a day. Anyone with any similar thoughts?

No way--- Windows Mail fits that description, but Windows Live Mail is a
whole different animal which is (IMHO) a real piece of garbage software
compared to OE or WM. While Windows Live Mail may offer one or two
advantages over OE or WM, it is buggy, erratic, and painfully slow. The
only reason I use it is because of it's compatibility with Hotmail--- for my
Pop3 and usenet accounts, I continue to use OE.

"WebDAV" for HTTPMail access. Stores email messages as individual files,
instead of in a proprietary database folder. It can synchronize to Windows
Live Services. Arranges all accounts with separate folder tree (MSOE uses a
common Inbox for all POP3 accounts). Probably more than "somewhat"
different, in the end.

If your Windows Live Mail is "painfully slow", you're doing something
wrong. It is plenty fast on my modest laptop.

Nice bit of insight there, MHL. You're probably the IT guy for your company
working on the help desk who nobody likes.

not mention that. I am now. That's what I was looking for....great job.
Great it works for you, but it would be interesting to know just WHAT we
doing wrong:-)
WinXP home Sp3, Pentium 4 2.8G with 1.5G RAM, (OK, not the greatest box -
but I have a computer to work for me, not me working for the next more
powerful computer!!) no other prog running:
Start up of WLM 30s! until I see the last selected message in [Inbox] and

There are 6 Messages max in the [Inbox], none in

working. This is with a Windows Live ID sign in enabled (that is optional,
and can be disabled).
I have Quick Views enabled, and at least 100 unread email messages are

listed therein. Most are for an IMAP account on a local (as in on my home
network) server, and have been viewed in another email application.
Whether you are doing something wrong, or not, I can't say. But I am using a
Live ID assigned with a third party domain (my email address for my locally
run server, out in the garage). Only thirty-four contacts. Using a Live ID
sign in means that WLMail initially connects with the Windows Live servers
to synchronize things like the calendar (which I don't use), and contacts.
That may be a time eater, if you use the calendar, with a lot of events/task
reminders, and have a contact list of several hundred email addresses. I
don't know, though; are you using a Windows Live ID to sign in with? Try
disabling it and see if that speeds up the loading.
