Transferring WLM and OE Data Between Computers and Op. Systems

I need assistance with the following task:

I have WLM and OE set on my old computer running under Windows XP Home
Edition and IE 6. I am in a process of choosing and buying a new computer
which will run W. Vista and IE 7 or 8. I intend to migrate my OE Identities
folder, WLM Store Folder and any locally stored WL data to my new computer.
Is there any conversion required between XP and Vista for these data folders
or is it just a matter of copying them over? Is there anything else in
particular I would need to do in order to be able to run WLM with current
data on my new computer as well as my OE local folders? (I use OE just to
access old local folders I kept there to view offline. I didn’t want them
converted and active on WLM.) I would appreciate any tips and guidance on
what I am facing here.

Thanks, A.

Re: Transferring WLM and OE Data Between Computers and Op. Systems

OE will not run on Vista. So that is not an option.

But you can convert the OE folders to EML files (one per message). EML
files can be read by WLM without importing them into the WLM folders.
You can create a Windows folder for each OE folder and then in each OE
select all messages and drag them to the corresponding Windows folder.
The messages will get file name with the subject and a number added for
duplicate names.

The version of IE is not relevant.

For moving WLM see:

Re: Transferring WLM and OE Data Between Computers and Op. Systems

How do I access Windows' folder with WLM? Do I need to import the eml
messages from this folder? Can I import the whole folder by pointing to it,
or only the messages within? Then how do I direct these messages to import
inside a specific Storage folder within WLM?

Re: Transferring WLM and OE Data Between Computers and Op. Systems

Export WLM
- provides the option to export everything(all folders and Storage folders) or selective folders
- A blank folder is required to hold the export
- Export to a jump drive, external drive, or spare partition that will be accessible on the next pc

Import
- Same as above, import everything or selective.

In both cases, you export/import folders and their contents, not individual messages. For messages, use drag and drop(WLM to a
Windows Explorer folder)

Re: Transferring WLM and OE Data Between Computers and Op. Systems

Michael and Winston,

I still don't understand how to access my old OE messages with WLM after
they are dragged/transferred into a Windows Explorer folder. Michael wrote:

Please send instruction on how to tell WLM to read them from the Windows
Explorer folder that is not showing on the left as one of the Storage
Folders. Or how to bring this folder into the WLM desktop environment so it
can access them.

Thank you,
A.

Re: Transferring WLM and OE Data Between Computers and Op. Systems

If you dragged your messages from OE into a Windows Explorer folder, drag them into WLM(preferably a user created folder in Storage
folders), once present and only if desired drag them into the appropriate email account folder(Inbox, Sent, etc)...

Note: If deleting/removing an account(email or news) in WLM, doing so will delete all messages and folders from WLM and your hard
drive, thus think twice about using the email account folders as the primary archive(the Storage folder, their subfolders, and
their messages are not removed with account removal)

Re: Transferring WLM and OE Data Between Computers and Op. Systems

You can import the messages, but don't have to. Based on your message,
it seems that you don't want to import the old messages.

All you need to do is go to Windows Explorer, locate the folder with EML
files and double click an EML file. It will open in a WLM message
reading window.

The limitation of leaving the message outside of WLM is that all you
have is the subject and date to go on. You wont be able to see the FROM
or TO until you open the message.

If you want to import the messages, you can create folders in WLM and
then drag the EML files into them.
