Every time I try to delete my junk emails, I get the message: "An unknown
error has occurred." This happens to my junk emails under comcast.net, but
not under Hotmail. Windows XP Pro, SP3. This has only started in the last
couple of days.

"empty junk email folder." I still don't know why I cannot do it the usual
way.
Hi, Someone.
I usually just highlight the Junk email folder and click the little "x" that
appears at the far right of the folder name. This deletes all the contents
of that folder. (I visually scan the list for false positives first, of
course.)
But I use only POP3, not Hotmail or any other protocol.
That "unknown error" message should not appear, of course. But it might be
caused by one of your Junk messages, and the error might disappear if you
manage to delete that message. It might be a junk email that arrived "in
the last couple of days", corresponding to the time the error started
appearing.
If this doesn't work for you, there is still Mail2Web: http://mail2web.com/
You can use this free service to access your server's mailbox and delete the
stubborn message.

R.C.,
Not the OP.. If it occurs in WLM, it could be caused by a variation in the account's Junk folder contents(in Explorer) vs. the
WLM Message store index file.
A compaction(set counter to 1, File/Work Offline, File/Exit) may resolve it.

What worked for me was to right click the folder and select "delete
contents." Once all those junk emails were deleted, I've had no problem
deleting them the way I once did, but using the "x" at the right is easier
and I now do that. Thanks for the tip.
I don't know why I got that error message before. If it were a result of a
junk email, it must've been the first, because I tried deleting that
separately, with the same error message. I use WLM. Could it have been
that a junk email contained some kind of coding to prevent its deletion?

Hi, Someone.
Thanks for that informative feedback.
Could be. I'm not as expert as Winston and some of the others here, so I’m
> Could it have been that a junk email contained some kind of coding to
> prevent its deletion?
not sure such code is possible. But I do know that messages can be
"malformed" - on purpose or by some glitch in the system - in such a way
that they can't be deleted by "normal" methods. That's why we often
recommend to use the browser interface and a resource such as Mail2Web to
delete at least one message from the server; if that doesn't fix it, delete
one more...

I'm not aware of any code that a junk email message would contain nor WLM modifying a message placed in the Junk Mail folder
preventing deletion.
If it's not related to the web server housing the account, then its usually an problem with the previous mentioned variation
between the Index and the file stored/not stored on the hard drive.

The problem has been resolved, but I don't understand the "compaction (set
