    OE on Vista

My PC with XP and OE on it broke down entirely and had to be scrapped.
Bought a new PC yesterday that comes with Vista preloaded. I have been
advised that OE cannot be loaded on Vista, which may make life difficult for
me as I like OE very much and I had a number of user created folders there
that I use for important work. Before the breakdown I had backed up OE on a
    CD.

Am posting from the home laptop that has OE and XP. I have been advised that
it would be advisable for me to use Windows Live Mail for the Vista PC and
I'll be able to import the OE folders from the CD to continue the OE type
experience, and that Windows Mail may not be right for the purpose.

Would appreciate the advise from the experts here to guide me as I am not
that good with computers. As far as possible I would like to continue with
the OE type experience and Neswgroups.

    TIA

    Ben,

FWIW, I used OE with 32-bit Vista Home for a while with no problems. I
switched to Windows Live Mail because I have a Hotmail address, and several
Office Live addresses I use for my website, and it seemed the better way to
    go.

OE should run on Vista just fine.

But I am told that OE cannot be loaded on to Vista. That Vista will not take
    OE.

No you didn't. What you probably used was Windows Mail which is very
    similar....

Move your backed up OE dbx files from the CD to a folder on the Vista
computer. Highlight the dbx files, right click, Properties, uncheck Read
    Only.

In WLMail, File, Import, Messages, OE6, browse to the folder with the dbx
    files.

In WLMail, Alt + V, Layout, Folder pane, check Show Storage folders. Your
imported messages will be located in Storage folders.

windows.live.com\wlmail Uncheck programs that you don't want.

It can't. MS Outlook Express was bundled with MS Internet Explorer through
version 6 of the latter. Thus MSOE is available on Windows operating systems
through Windows XP; the last version to include MSIE6.

Windows Vista does not ship with MSIE6, and there is no way it, or MSOE,
will install; that I know of. Windows Vista ships with Windows Mail, an
email client which looks surprisingly like MSOE; so much so that many think
it is "MSOE7". It is not. It is, simply, "Windows Mail".

    Not quite, Ben.

In OE General newsgroup, you told us that you missed "the old way"
that your Hotmail account worked in OE (i.e., before WebDAV support
ended on 01 Sept-09) and that you'd like your Hotmail account to work
"the old way" in your Mail Client when you got your Vista computer.

As such, I recommended installing Windows LIVE Mail to access your
Hotmail account (via DeltaSync) in WinXP *now* so that you'd be
familiar with it when you got your Vista computer and so that it'd be
easier for you to transfer your WinXP data to your Vista computer.

I did NOT say anything about importing OE data into Windows LIVE Mail
or Windows Mail on your Vista computer, mainly to avoid any further
    confusion for you.

As I am not that good on computers, maybe I couldn't explain myself
    properly.
After the HTTP support ended, I converted to POP3 as advised by MS. But the
OE never really worked well again. Couldn't send msgs for one. I still have
the POP3 OE on this laptop from which I am posting now, but to me POP3 was a
curse. I don't use the OE anymore although it is still there. I use WLM
    which is working fine.

But things are not fine on the Vista PC. Tried to download WLM but I ended
up getting Windows Live Hotmail, which I don't want. How should I go about
getting WLM on the Vista PC?

Also I still have not restored my backed up OE from the previous XP PC to
the new Vista PC. Would appreciate if you could help me in simple steps.
Someone had told me how earlier, but I couldn't understand.

OK, so I've had WLH on this laptop now for a few days. So how do I transfer
the data to my Vista PC? And what data is it? In simple steps please. And
also how to get WLM on my Vista PC. As explained earlier I downloaded WLM
from the correct link, but I got WLH instead. The patient is still sick.

It would help when you don't understand to reply to that message.

You keep saying that your messages are backed up. You don't say how you
    backed them up.
Did you use a backup program?
Or did you copy the OE dbx files to a CD?

Move your backed up OE dbx files from the CD to a folder on the Vista
    computer.

Highlight the dbx files, right click, Properties, uncheck Read
    Only.

What happens if you Start, Run, wlmail, OK?

In WLMail, File, Import, Messages, OE6, browse to the folder with the dbx
    files.

In WLMail, Alt + V, Layout, Folder pane, check Show Storage folders. Your
