    Opening .eml attachments

I have a new system (Win 7 Pro 64 bit) with no Outlook or OE. When I try to
open an .eml attachment in Win Live Mail, I get an error message: no program
to open attachment. Any suggestions on where to find a free download that
will allow me to open .eml attacments? thanks

    Re: Opening .eml attachments

It is possible to install Outlook (part of the Office suite of
programs) on a Win 7 machine.

Otherwise, Microsoft promote the free program, Windows Live Mail,
as a successor to Outlook Express. It seems that you are using
WLMail already. WLMail should be able to open EML files.

One workaround might be to save the EML file to a location on
your computer (such as your desktop). Then, open WLMail and drag
and drop the EML file into a storage folder in WLMail (from
where, you should be able to open it).

However, you really need to configure the file type association
    for EML files.

    1. I have not used Win 7, so I cannot advise upon detailed
procedures. However, a Google search led me to
    http://vista.blorge.com/2009/10/26/h...s-in-windows-7.

    2. Once you have changed the EML file type association to
WLMail, I also recommend you open Internet Explorer 8. Then,
click on Tools / Internet Options and select the Programs tab.
Specify Windows Live Mail as the default EMail program.

    Re: Opening .eml attachments

    Wint 7, same as Vista..
    Control Panel/Default Programs/Set Your Default Programs/Select Windows Live Mail/
    - click SEt this program as Default
To Verify(same screen) - Click 'Choose defaults for this program'. Verify that the *.eml item is checked

Then Verify that *.eml is checked on the file types tab.

IE8 has a 'Set Programs' option that will load the above applet.

Did you download and install Windows Live Mail?
If so, it may not have all its defaults assigned.
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
    "Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Live Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Turn off the Cap Lock. It is considered as shouting.
Did your computer come with mail or WLMail? It helps to give an answer when
you don't have to guess what was written.

    Re: Opening .eml attachments

Windows 7 computers don't come with any email program unless
your seller happened to install one.
I don't know what "assigned to default" means. Windows Live Mail
can be your default email program without having all of its possible
protocols assigned. That is why it is important to see the message
"This program has all its defaults". You didn't confirm whether you saw
that exact message after you performed the steps I gave you.
