WLM Questions?

I am trying to upgrade from 32 bit Vista Home Premium to 64 bit Win7 Home
premium and have some questions on email services. I realize that going from
32 Vista to 64 bit Win7 requires a clean install.

I currently use Windows Mail in Vista and I plan to switch to Windows Live
Mail in Win7.

My questions include:

1. In Windows Live Mail, it shows the my accounts in the left column. Can
these be hidden, and if not, how can I move them to the bottom of the list so
that they stay there. Currently, whenever I close Windows Live Mail, the all
of my accounts pop to the top of the list the next time I open Windows Live
Mail.

2. Each account has its own Inbox, etc. Can these be removed so that there
is only one (1) Inbox, i.e., the inbox in the Storage Folders?

3. When I open Windows Live Mail, it automatically logs into my Live mail
account. How can I prevent this from happening?

4. When you push Send/Receive in Windows Mail, a download progress window
opens showing the download progress for each of the accounts. When I click
on Sync in Windows Live Mail, the progress window doesn't appear until you
rapidly click Sync a second time (assuming that the downloads are still in
progress). Can I have the download progress open when I click Sync the first
time?

5. Can I use Windows Mail in 64 bit Win7, and if so, how do I load it? And
if I continue to use Windows Mail will it still be supported and work
properly?

6. If I go from 32 bit Vista Home Premium to 32 bit Win7 Home premium (no
clean install required), will Windows Mail still be on my computer and work
properly?

You can reorder them, right-click on an account name, then select move
up/down.

No, you can't hide the accounts, but you can a Quick View to access all
Inboxes, etc. in one view.

No, you have to click twice.

Sort of. You need to change some permissions, and copy the Windows Mail
folder from a 64 bit Vista install.
It mostly works, but the contacts folder doesn't have it's special
functions. You can add contacts, but not groups, AFAICS. Any time you do
an upgrade, or run SFC, etc. it will wipe out the Windows Mail folder, and
you have to copy it back again. This is not supported.

No. The Vista WM files will be replaced with the Win 7 subset of WM files
which do not work. You would have to copy the 32 bit Vista WM files over to
Win 7.

The accounts can't be hidden.

The general order of appearance is:

Quick views
Accounts
Outbox
Storage folders

Within the "Accounts" section, you can order the accounts any way you wish.
However, the "general order" of appearance is (for now) immutable.

No. With MSOE, there is a global Inbox for all POP3 accounts. A much
requested feature was to have a separate Inbox for each POP3 account.

With WLMail, there are unique POP3 account Inboxes. A much requested feature
is to have a global Inbox (as in MSOE).

For reasons only the Gnomes of Redmond understand (if even they do
understand), there is no user option to select one, or the other.

Tools | Options | Connections: Click on the "Stop signing in" button.

FYI, WLMail is not logging in to your email account, it is logging in to the
"Windows Live Services". This allows synchronization of your contacts list,
at the least. If you "Stop signing in", your local WLMail contacts list may
not include those contacts currently residing on the Windows Live Services
servers.

If there is a way, I've never found it.

Not having performed this upgrade, I don't have any answers for these
questions.

Re: WLM Questions?

To amplify a bit on Dave's response to #1:
You can also minimize the folder list to one icon per account.

I keep the folders collapsed to one line each. Clicking on a folder
shows me the Inbox for that account, which is usually all I need.
The remainder of my needs is usually done in the composite Quick View
folders (All Sent, All Junk, etc.).

Re: WLM Questions?

for

4

after click the sync all
look in the lower right corner for the progress information.
clicking on it will brings up the progress window.

I have also found that waiting till the first ARROW CHASING ITS TAIL stops then click again the progress window usually shows up.

so you have 2 possibilities.
