    Recovered Items

I have read a couple of posts in this group re the subject as discussed by
Messrs Sommer, Aldwinckle, White et al - I cannot say I am anymore
enlightened re this subject - but that's me.
I installed WLM on 16 Nov 2009 - all went well.
Since then, there has been a build up of items in 'Recovered.'
All have a date and time, but no indication as to their content etc.
When clicked on, they have no message to display, and having read the other
threads on the subject, this appears to be the norm.
A right click does give certain options, one of which is delete.
If these items are empty, then what possible use could they be in the
    future.
I always close WLM before shutting down the computer.

Without starting a second thread, if I may, what I have noticed in the last
week or so, is that WLM opens slower than at first - in addition, when it
does open for the first time after starting up the computer, it populates
    the screen in 'sections'.
Further closing and opening of WLM during the course of the day does not
seem to display the same behaviour.

    Hi, Antioch.

    Welcome to the Club! :^{

That's the "wondering about WLM" Club. Some of us have been wondering and
trying to figure this out since WLM was in beta. But we didn't help write
the program, and there are no documents that explain the thinking of the WLM
Team, so most of what we've learned has been from our own experiences - and
from each other. So take our comments - mine, at least - as those of
experienced users, NOT of "Insiders" who really were in on the design of
    WLM.

    > If these items are empty, then what possible use could they be in the

There seem to be a few different reasons for Recovered Items. The bottom
line is that WLM's processes were interrupted - intentionally or not -
before it had finished with all its tasks, including background tasks such
as sorting messages and marking them Read. So, when WLM is started again,
it tries to finish those tasks. But sometimes there were too many balls in
the air when it was shut down before, so the restart is not smoothly
successful. Sometimes messages we know we've read are presented again as
Unread. Sometimes there are messages in Recovered Items. Sometimes
messages are duplicated, with the From line in the "Antioch" format in one
message and "antioch" <antioch@newsgroup> in the other message. And
sometimes there is just no describing the mess that results.

The good news is that USUALLY, given a few hours of "quiet time", WLM will
recover and clean up its own mess. But this still leaves a Recovered items
folder sometimes. Usually, if I drill down, down, down... far enough in
that folder tree, I'll come to one or more messages - almost always .nws
posts - at the bottom level, and usually those are messages that I know I've
already read. And usually, if I look in the current messages for that
newsgroup, I'll see those messages there, whether Read or Unread. So, I'll
delete the copies in Recovered items. Sometimes, I'll delete the
files/folders from the bottom up; other times I'll just delete the whole
Recovered item tree. Either way, the deleted items go into Deleted Items
and, since I've set Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance to empty the
Deleted Items folder on Exit, I never see them again.

    > I always close WLM before shutting down the computer.
That OUGHT to work, and usually does. But if WLM is compacting the
database, this can take much longer than expected and the shutdown might
still be premature, even if we've waited several minutes.

    > seem to display the same behaviour.
I usually keep WLM open all day; it's probably my most-used program.
Sometimes it seems to take longer to open and I don't know what causes this.
Before I can investigate, it has returned to normal and I forgot that I was
    going to check it out.

Compacting the database seems to keep the recovered items at a min.
Go to Tools->Option->Advanced->Maintenance and change the Compact
    database
at every X shutdown to 2. Open close WLM until it does its thing.
    Then delete the recovered items.
    Seems to start faster too.

    Re: Recovered Items

The primary reason for items being added to the Storage folder is not lack of compaction, but prematurely closing WLM while a
process in mail or news mode is still in operation including switching modes(mail to news or vice versa), aborting a process, etc.

    interesting..

I hibernate my PC all the time. And I still get the recovered items.
And if I reboot I let windows terminate the apps.

So there must be something else causing the problem.

    Hello Ron
The time between actions can vary - but more often than not, at least 10
mins or more have passed after coming out of WLM to shutdown.
Shut down is quite quick - have had it slower when there was the need for a
'prog to end' and when I had some crxp AV provided free from my cable
    IP/ISP.

    Hello RC
Many thanks for the info regarding the funny little peculiarities in this
software - I will at least be ready for them should I encounter them in the
    future.
Perhaps leaving it open when I leave the computer, rather than on desktop,
will give it a chance to sort itself out.
I will also keep an eye on the numbers and see if any disappear - and also
clear the Storage sent and delete as I have noticed how they collect there
having been deleted/read from other folders.
    Most useful though.

I have it set as I did with OE6 - every 100 - I do it myself well before

Then it seems strange that there is no sort of warning when closing WLM
