Hi, Antioch.
Welcome to the Club! :^{
That's the "wondering about WLM" Club. Some of us have been wondering and
trying to figure this out since WLM was in beta. But we didn't help write
the program, and there are no documents that explain the thinking of the WLM
Team, so most of what we've learned has been from our own experiences - and
from each other. So take our comments - mine, at least - as those of
experienced users, NOT of "Insiders" who really were in on the design of
WLM.

line is that WLM's processes were interrupted - intentionally or not -
before it had finished with all its tasks, including background tasks such
as sorting messages and marking them Read. So, when WLM is started again,
it tries to finish those tasks. But sometimes there were too many balls in
the air when it was shut down before, so the restart is not smoothly
successful. Sometimes messages we know we've read are presented again as
Unread. Sometimes there are messages in Recovered Items. Sometimes
messages are duplicated, with the From line in the "Antioch" format in one
message and "antioch" <antioch@newsgroup> in the other message. And
sometimes there is just no describing the mess that results.
The good news is that USUALLY, given a few hours of "quiet time", WLM will
recover and clean up its own mess. But this still leaves a Recovered items
folder sometimes. Usually, if I drill down, down, down... far enough in
that folder tree, I'll come to one or more messages - almost always .nws
posts - at the bottom level, and usually those are messages that I know I've
already read. And usually, if I look in the current messages for that
newsgroup, I'll see those messages there, whether Read or Unread. So, I'll
delete the copies in Recovered items. Sometimes, I'll delete the
files/folders from the bottom up; other times I'll just delete the whole
Recovered item tree. Either way, the deleted items go into Deleted Items
and, since I've set Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance to empty the
Deleted Items folder on Exit, I never see them again.

database, this can take much longer than expected and the shutdown might
still be premature, even if we've waited several minutes.

Sometimes it seems to take longer to open and I don't know what causes this.
Before I can investigate, it has returned to normal and I forgot that I was
going to check it out.
All this probably hasn't helped you much - except to let you know that You
Are Not Alone. :^}
