Did you actually create a Hotmail address ? (all Hotmail accounts are Live ID's)
You can see if you did by attempting to logon at account.live.com
If you did and don't wish to keep it..
a. It will automatically go inactive after 270 days or after the first 10 days if not used(a logon in WLM would negate the 10 day
option). After one year it will be deleted. From day 271 to 365...the username will be reserved for your use to reactivate the
account. It could be up to two years(one year after the 365th day deletion that the same username is available to create a new
account)
or
b. To push the process a bit..
1. Close A Hotmail account
http://mail.live.com/default.aspx?rr...&wa=wsignin1.0
- login with the username/pw, then click close
2. Cancel a Live ID
Go to account.live.com to cancel the Live ID

Note: if pursuing 1 and 2, 1 must be done before 2 or the process will fail.
