"The connection to the server has failed.
Subject 'Luann'
Server: 'smtp.comcast.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10060"
I have been sending mail OK until last night. When I, again, was unable to
send, I called Comcast and got a "technician" who spoke while she chewed
gum. She said I had to change my password. I told her I was able to
receive mail and accessed My Comcast on the web using my password, but she
said it wasn't working. So, she gave me a new one, which was no help, so I
switched back to the password I had and told her I'm switching back. Then
she attempted to transfer me, but gave me the commercial section. That
section attempted to transfer me again, but I got cut off. I tried calling
Comcast again, but was again cut off. So, I've given up any hope of
getting relief through phone calls. The Comcast website for help was
useless.

I've been able to send email here at microsoft.public.windows, but not
through the "mail." "News" is OK. I also used the web to send the email I
wanted to send, and it appears it was sent OK.

On your account setup - Servers tab, enter a check in the box "My server
requires authentication". Also, on the Advance tab, the SMTP port should be
587. Post back any other error message you may get after making these
changes.

Thanks very much slk759. The server's tab did have the check mark, but the
port was 25. I don't know how it was changed to 25. I have been unable to
send email only since yesterday, so it must have been correct before
yesterday.
Now, that the Comcast "technician" changed my password, I want my old
password back. How do I do that?

Call Comcast back about the password.
Your settings were correct. Comcast started blocking Port 25 more than a
year ago, but they are implementing it slowly around their communications
arena. It just happened to catch up with you now.

Thanks, Bruce. Rather than call Comcast again, I'll live with my new
password. It's strange that since Comcast has been blocking Port 25 for a
year none of their technicians seem to know that.

Doesn't Comcast have a way to change your password?
somewhere in the 'your account' section of the web site, maybe.
OTOH some sites will not let you reuse a password, or have beefed up their
security requirements for p/w strength. But there's probably a suitable
variation of what you actually want that would work for you (i.e. stick in
your head).
Actually you don't want to keep a password that some tech gave you any
longer than necessary.
