How can I remove entries from the live mail custom dictionary in XP? The edit button doesn't work - nothing happens when I click on it.

I don't know why the Edit button doesn't work, but there's another way of doing it: go to the Proof folder in your %localappdata%. The path will vary according to your OS, but on a typical XP installation it's at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Proof - it'll be something similar on other OSs. Your custom dictionary is a langxxxx.lex file, where xxxx is the LCID of your preferred language. Open the file with Notepad and edit it as you wish (one term per line), then save it. Check that Notepad hasn't added '.txt' to the filename - if it has, remove it.

[If you want to ask questions here about WLMail, use the excellent newsreader it provides to access this newsgroup direct instead of via some intermediary. Try clicking this link:

which might just open your WLMail in News mode and bring you to the horse's mouth, so to speak.]

Thanks Noel. That actually didn't work - the proof folder was empty. However, I found the dictionary in program files/common files/microsoft shared. There it was - labeled as custom.

"Patty" <user@newsgroup/> wrote in message news:OgmJ0$PsKHA.1352@newsgroupI'm pretty certain that WLMail doesn't know about custom.dic in the shared proof folder - that's an Office version, whereas WLMail has to be able to check spelling on machines that don't have any other MS apps installed at all. It's just the same sort of file, though - a plain-text wordlist.

Perhaps you don't have a custom dictionary yet in WLMail (your proof folder being empty would indicate that, if you're sure you've found the right folder). In a new message window, try typing a word you'd like to *add* to your dictionary - your surname or the name of the town where you live for example is not likely to be recognized, unless you're Mrs Smith of Chicago or somewhere. Hit F7 and select 'Add' when it finds the unknown word. Then go back and look for langxxx.lex.
If your custom.dic already contains words you'd like to have in your WLMail dictionary, open it with Notepad, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy. Close it again, open langxxx.lex with Notepad, Ctrl-A to select all, Delete, then Ctrl-V to paste the wordlist from custom.dic. Ctrl-S to save, Alt-F4 to close. You might have to restart WLMail to see the effect (I'm not sure whether it reads the dictionary into memory at startup and I'm too lazy to check ATM).

Sure you are using Windows Live Mail ?
The custom dictionary file on XP is stored in
C:\Documents and Settings\<your windows id>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Proof
and in the file Noel noted. e.g lang0409.lex

If so, it would be much better if you used Windows Live Mail for accessing this newsgroup rather than posting from a location that
harvests messages from the Msft server.
Open WLM, click on the News shortcut, then double click on the link below

Thanks, Noel - problem solved. I'd have sworn that I was in the correct place the other day when I told you that the proof folder was empty, but I must not have been because I tried again today and found the custom dictionary exactly where you said it would be. I'm sure it's the right dictionary because I'd added a test word as per your suggestion and my added word was there. I've opened it, edited the dictionary and put it on my desktop for easy future access.
On the newsgroup subject, I tried to follow your and Winston's instructions for accessing the newsgroup with Windows Live Mail and discovered that my internet provider - Comcast - doesn't offer newsgroup access. I'd need to sign up for a third party newsgroup provider and since you've solved my problem, I don't really want to do that.
Thank you again...

One doesn't need to access this newsgroup via their ISP.
It is publicly available, no third party required..just setup the news server in WLM, download the groups and subscribe to this
group.
This link should set it up for you if WLM is open
