Windows Live Mail is a desktop client
Windows Live Hotmail is the web interface(web UI) and accessed in a browser(e.g. I.E.)
These are your options: (read all for info and then see 'Notes' at end)
1. Hotmail accounts can be accessed via the Http protocol (DeltaSync) in
a. Windows Live Mail (XP, Vista, Windows 7) or
b. Outlook 2003/07/10 by using the Outlook Connector add-in (Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP, Windows 7)
2. Hotmail accounts can be accessed via the pop3 protocol in
c. and capable pop3 email client(Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail,Outlook,Outook Express, and/or 3rd party email client)
3. Hotmail accounts can be accessed via the web in Internet Explorer
Option (1) will provide the ability to see the same folders and messages(synchronized) on each pc.
Option (2) will download a copy of the message from the Hotmail web UI' Inbox to the local email client. Option 2 will also cause
the copy of the message in the web UI Inbox to be moved to the web UI 'Deleted' folder where it will be retained for 5 days before
automatic purge. No configuration option is available to modify the 5 day purge. To override this move and purge to the web UI
Deleted folder, one must configure the local email client to Leave Messages on the server.
Option 3 provides access to the messages present on the server at the point in time of of access. Management of messages(move,
deletion) in the web UI will impact what (1) or (2) does. Likewise management of messages using (1) or (2) with a local email
client will impact what is available on the web server.
Notes: In order to see the same folders in messages on two machines in a desktop client *and* synchronize across both machines one
would need to use option 1 on both machines provided the o/s system requirements are met. Unfortunately, Option 1 does not support
Windows 2000.
Thus you only option to approach synchronization(same folders and messages) across 2 machines..
Use Option 1 on the XP unit, and continue to use Option 3 on the Win2K unit.
