    Live Essentials, synchronizing contacts

If I'm posting this in the wrong place, a thousand pardons

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and downloaded Windows Live Essentials. I
am quite confused about how the contacts and calendar are supposed to synch
    with the Web version.

If I make a change to a mail contact on the PC-based "Essential" version, it
does not show up on the Web version. However, if I try to synch them, the
change that I made to the contact (phone number) is wiped out by the Web
version. I'm wondering, do I have to make changes to my contacts ONLY on the
Web? I am SOOO confused. I haven't messed with the calendar too much yet, but
I'm guessing I'll run into a similar issue.

I have tried to find detailed information on how this whole synching biz
(which I am new to) is supposed to work, but haven't found anything useful.

Any help, or links to good DETAILED info on synching Windows Live
    Essentials, much appreciated!

You have to sign in with a Live ID to sync the Contacts and Calendar. If
not signed in, Sign in shows below the close X.

    Re: Live Essentials, synchronizing contacts

Sign in to Windows Live in WLM with the **same** Live ID used for the web interface(mail.live.com or contacts.live.com) to ensure
your contacts are syncrhonized between the two locations(local and web). The same Live ID would be necessary on another pc with
WLM installed to access those same contacts.

WLM provides two modes of operation(Sign on with Live ID and No Sign on)
    - each have their own set of contacts and calendar.
    - each have their own local contacts and calendar database
    - only the former(Sign on with Live ID) synchronizes the respective database with the online version(contacts.live.com and
    calendar.live.com)
    - use of a Live ID to sign on to Windows Live ensures the contacts and calendar are available in both locations(WLM-Local, Web
Interface-Remote) unlike a 'No Sign on' in WLM which only uses the local stored(and separate)contact and calendar databases.

Any email address can be a registered as a Live ID. All Hotmail type accounts(Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com, other country
specific derivatives e.g. live.ca) are Live IDs. A non Hotmail type address(e.g. third party addresses like Yahoo, Gmail, your isp,
etc) can be registered as a Live ID. Non Hotmail type email address do not have an Inbox in the web UI, but they do have a Live
ID web based contact(contacts.live.com) and calendar(calendar.live.com)and are capable of being used for the Live ID signon in WLM
for local access to those same contacts and calendar.
