Delete message, then go to Inbox list

When I have a list of new unread messages in my Inbox, I open the first one
on the list. After I read that message, I click the "delete" option. When I
do this the message (#1) is deleted, and the next message (#2) on the e-mail
list is opened up. I do not want the next e-mail message (#2) to open up.
Instead, after I delete message #1, I just want to go to my Inbox list of
messages so I can choose which one of my other e-mail messages I want to
open. How can I set up my system to do this?

The only way to do that is to uncheck the Reading Pane in View | Layout.

If you double click a message to read in its own window, you need to
close the window and then delete it from the message list.

The only way to not have another message open is to view and delete the last
    message in the list.
