Unable to install Live Messenger 8.5

Our corporate workstation (XPSP2) has Windows Update feature disabled and
we're trying to download from the link; http://get.live.com/messenger/config,
but Live components update keeps failure after lengthy upgrade (scanning and
downloading) process over company LAN.

Yet, installing a previous version, 8.1 is not a problem. Is it because of
the disabled WU features?

Greetings Nick,

Try directly from this MSI file:

Re: Unable to install Live Messenger 8.5

Thanks! Jonathan.

I confirmed the standalone installer does work with the workstation.
I assume the "on-demand" installer (WLinstaller.exe) itself proves
problematic.
I wonder how come MS shift to such annoying "on-demand" type instead of the
traditional standalone type. (Maybe for genuine checking purpose?)

Re: Unable to install Live Messenger 8.5

HI Nick,

You're not the only person who's had trouble with it, believe me.

I think the point was to improve the visibility of the other Live products and to make it
"easy" to update to the latest versions without having to go through the download, install
routine for each application.

I hate to blast people's hard work, but I do believe the installer was released too early as
it's not very robust, had some severe compatibility issues, in some cases downloads the wrong
versions and other problems.

Jonathan

Thanks always for your prompt response. I understand your technical
perspective toward the WL installer.

Cheers.

Re: Unable to install Live Messenger 8.5

I'm having a problem with Messenger on Server 2003 64 bit. I used the MSI
and 8.5 installed (upgraded from 8) but this morning all our users (using
smart terminals) get the message that they have to upgrade. Is there any
other version for 03 64bit?
Thanks
