Installer Error 2771

I currently have Live Messenger ver. 8.5.1302.1018 installed and working
fine (XP MCE) When I log in to XP or reboot, I get a Windows Live
Messenger window with the message

"The installer has encountered an unexpected error
installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package.
The error code is 2771."

How can I get XP to stop running the installer when I start up?

TIA

Tom Lake

I seem to have fixed the problem by uninstalling Live Messenger and
reinstalling it.
I was hesitant to do that at first because I wasn't sure the reinstall would
work.

Thanks to all responders!

Re: Installer Error 2771

Greetings Tom,

Just for interest, the 2771 means there was a missing component and your reinstall must've
added it back.

I've been experiencing the same installer error 2771 whenever I start
Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018, after installing XP SP3 RC. Messenger
still works fine though. Should I reinstall Windows Live Messenger, and would
that rollback any updates applied by XP SP3?

I also receive the same error (2771) with Windows Live Messenger
8.5.1302.1018, AFTER INSTALLING XP SP3 (SERVICE PACK 3) RC.

Re: Installer Error 2771

Me too. This is a SP3-generated error.
