Well, every version of Messenger since MSN Messenger 6 has a message archive feature that
saves that information locally if you've turned it on. Additionally, third party tools like
Messenger Plus will save this info too.

Microsoft reserves the right to save this information as per their terms of service, what
they are saving, is not completely known. A few years ago they stated x number of video
conversations had been made since the feature was added to the product, so at least
statistical information has been saved in that regard (although since it loads an ad before
it starts, it's not very difficult to collect info like that).

Thanks for that info. Is the content of conversations
archived or logged in some way or is it just that a conversation has
taken place between x and y?

The local stores mentioned previously will store both of this information.

On Microsoft's side, it's unknown precisely what they're storing.
