Messenger and Flash Player

Everytime I start Messenger it pops up stating I dont have the latest Adobe
Flash player installed. I click the link to download flashplayer, and it
loads up the flashplayer install page in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer just sits on the download page telling me to wait for it
to install and that I should press "yes" to any popups I recieve. Problem
is there is never a popup, IE sits there doing nothing and wont install
flashplayer, I also notice some of the pictures that are supposed to display
on the flashplayer page are only showing their placeholders whilst in IE.

I downloaded the flashplayer file manually, and installed. Messenger is
still bugging me to install it.

The really annoying thing is that I hate Internet Explorer, always have.
Vista is set to block internet explorer and instead use firefox as the
default program. I fail to see why messenger is still able to load a program
I specifically asked the system to block. Firefox does have flashplayer
installed, why cant messenger use that? (Its problems like these that made
me drop IE like a hot bag of spuds in the first place)

Guess my questions are:

Why is messenger using a program that I specifically asked vista to block
access to. I believe microsoft bought in this "default program" controls due
to a legal entanglement, does it even work?

Is there a quick way to fix mesenger so it will run without flashplayer
because IE is refusing to download or install it?

What are good alternative chat programs that can access the messenger
network that work in Vista?

Cheers
Daniel

Re: Messenger and Flash Player

Greetings Daniel,

Messenger uses flash directly for advertisements, winks and other things -- as such, it
complains when you don't have the latest "compatible" version installed.

Messenger will use the default browser for opening links -- however specific features like
opening Live Hotmail and what you're describing, use IE exclusively as Microsoft cannot
guarantee what happening in other browsers.

And yes, to answer your "well it doesn't appear to be working", I shall point to Adobe for
blame.

That all being said, it's most likely that Flash isn't updating itself properly. You are not
the first to experience this problem, although I did think it was fixed. As such, you might
want to try a manual uninstall of flash.

To do so, with all Internet Explorer windows shut down, go to the Control Panel, then
Programs, and then Programs and Features (or just Programs and Features if you're in classic
mode).

Then, in the search field at the top type flash and wait to see if there are any results.
Click each that are Macromedia Flash and choose Uninstall for each one.

Next, click the Start button, and type:
%systemroot%\syswow64\Macromed\Flash
and press Enter.

See what's still in there. If there's any uninstall program (unfortunately Macromedia has
renamed it more than once), run it and see what happens (uninstfl.exe, unintstall_activex.exe
are some examples).

If there's anything to remove it will prompt you to uninstall Flash, say Yes or OK. If this
fails or doesn't exist, continue on.

After this, check out what's left in the folder, delete everything. Then go back and re-run
Messenger and try the process again.

Re: Messenger and Flash Player

Gday John,

Thanks for the fast reply, you MVP guys are great

I gave all your instructions a whirl (and yep that sysroot command bought up
leftovers) but I still seemed to have the same problem with IE just sitting
there on the flashplayer install webpage doing nothing.

It did get me thinking a bit more though, I recently reloaded a backup
config file for my router ....it turns out my config file had "filter
activeX requests" turned on, and hence was filtering out the popup installer
for flashplayer in Internet Explorer <insert embarrassed expression here>

I turned off the filtering, and it seems the reinstall of flashplayer has
done the trick and fixed the problem. Im not sure why flashplayer suddenly
needed to be reinstalled but as you say it would be a matter for adobe (or
my tuneup program!) and not Internet Explorer

Thanks for your reply and help in the matter

Regards
Daniel

Hey Daniel,

You're very welcome, appreciate the feedback.

On the plus side, you have a clean install of Flash now

Glad I could help.
