LiveID Problems Signing in - 17th January

http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/...708!3892.entry |

Hello,

Just wanted to let everyone know that we're aware of the problems that users are
having logging in and using Hotmail (as well as some other Live ID sites) right
now. If you try to login you may recieve a blank page or it may take a long time
to complete the log in process. Our Operations engineers are working on the
issue, and we will get it resolved as soon as possible.

Thanks
Brandon

Hi,

I don't even understand blog posts like that. I mean, it's pretty obvious when there's a
global problem. Doesn't really tell you anything you didn't already know.

I think that many people begin to think it is only them with a problem and they
start contacting support. Putting up a blog post like that at least lets the
readership know that it isn't just them, which is why I posted it to some of the
newsgroups last night.
It would be nice if they could provide some more details, but that may have been
all they knew at the time. :-)

Even more interesting. I see that they deleted the entry rather than updated it
to report that it was resolved. Hmmmm....

This page is equally as useless. I can't remember this EVER saying there
was a problem, even though there has been many (although minor).

Re: LiveID Problems Signing in - 17th January

Hi,

For the status to be updated, it has to be a global problem and exist for a good period of
time. I have actually seen it change in the past two or three years as opposed to before
when it never ever changed.

I do some work for an online service which also has a blog and I'm often the one to update it
when there's an outage or issue. If the problem can be fixed within a few minutes, it
usually doesn't get posted as I'm busy fixing the problem as opposed to writing blog entries.
So I can see both sides of the coin.

Re: LiveID Problems Signing in - 17th January

Most services automatically check for problems, and reports them to a
webpage.

I'm sure Microsoft has the expertise for this?

Hi,

I'm sure there's both legal reasons and competitive reasons why that data isn't instant.

Even advertisers might be able to use that data to really validate how many people might be
seeing their ads which would affect their prices when negotiating with Microsoft...

Could go on forever really I mean, it's not really a technical problem.
