| | Exiting Windows Live when shutting down PC Every other program on the PC shuts itself down when I tell the PC to shut down, except Windows Live Messenger. If I try to shut down the PC without remembering first to Exit from Windows Live Messenger by right-clicking on the icon in the notification tray, Windows tells me that it is unable to shut down because msnmsgr.exe is still running. Is there anyway of curing this annoying feature? Using Vista Home Premium. -- Allan |

I've tried "repair", and when that didn't work I tried Uninstalling it (from the Control Panel) and downloading it again and reinstalling it, that made no difference. -- Allan "Jonathan Kay [MVP]" <msnewsreplies@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:O0yGgmVXIHA.6140@xxxxxx Quote: > Greetings Allan, > > It's not a feature -- this doesn't happen on any of my PCs. > > Are you using or have you used any third-party Messenger applications or > patches? | | Re: Exiting Windows Live when shutting down PC Hi Allan, Yeah a repair will simply copy over the files and make some registry entries. Another possibility is perhaps a piece of anti-virus software you might have installed, as a number of them love to lock into Messenger's api. | | Re: Exiting Windows Live when shutting down PC That's an interesting possibility Jonathan. The anti-virus software that I use is Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, and I did notice that one of the options that it offers is real-time protection against threats of virus or spyware in instant messaging files. Although this option is not selected, its existence does hint at the potential for a problem in this area. I have already been in contact with Trend over the fact that when I have their Spam Filter turned on, Windows Mail does not shut down properly; they are currently investigating this problem, so possibly the Windows Live problem is another symptom of the same fault. -- Allan "Jonathan Kay [MVP]" <msnewsreplies@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:E8240B80-3752-417C-987A-A0BA788B9E30@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi Allan, > > Yeah a repair will simply copy over the files and make some registry > entries. > > Another possibility is perhaps a piece of anti-virus software you might > have installed, as a number of them love to lock into Messenger's api. | | Re: Exiting Windows Live when shutting down PC Hi Allan, Hm, you would think that it wouldn't. I haven't heard anything specifically about Trend doing this. Norton used to be a really bad offender for this in some of their older versions, but I think they backed off. | | Re: Exiting Windows Live when shutting down PC Hello again Jonathan Trend say that nobody else has ever reported an incompatibility problem between Trend and Messenger (whereas I am not the first person to have had the problem with Trend and Windows Mail, merely the first person to supply them with enough diagnostic information that they can sensibly go looking for it). Also I have found that Windows Live still prevents the PC from shutting down, even if I completely disable the Trend protection and exit the program (although I am aware that even when Trend says it has shut itself down, it may leave some things behind it!). As regards Norton - I'll just say that the PC came with it ready-installed, and my first action before I connected to anything was to install Trend - which starts by asking "Do you wish to uninstall Norton?", and I punched the Yes button with great enthusiasm. But I am still no nearer to knowing the reason why my Messenger behaves in this way! Thank goodness it's only a minor inconvenience. -- Allan "Jonathan Kay [MVP]" <msnewsreplies@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:037148EC-4334-40AB-A46B-E0BF4280AACB@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi Allan, > > Hm, you would think that it wouldn't.
