Sending a file in Live Messenger

Hi there,

This has bugged me for quite a while now, and I thought I'd just ask a
few people what they thought about it,

I use Live Messenger all day, every day, great fun huh? Anyway,
messages (when they get through) arrive pretty much instantly, but sending a
file within the message window and not the sharing folder can produce some
strange results.

Sometimes it can take as long as 5-10 minutes before the file actually
appears on the other persons message window, why is this?

This actually suggests to me 1 of 2 things,

1. Messenger is doing something before it attempts to send the
file, maybe checking the file in some way or another. It doesn't copy it to
a temporary location as if I delete the file after it has appeared for the
other user but before it has been accepted; the transfer will fail.
2. The file transfer request is being sent to the remote PC via a
completely different route, i.e. it's being sent via some other server.

This actually concerns me as I see no logical reason as to why a request
for a file transfer would not take the same amount of time as a simple
message does to arrive, unless of course it's being redirected through
another server for some reason or another, not that it would ever be
admitted. Or maybe file transfers and messages are performed by different
servers?

Also, this has got to be the most annoying part of Messenger, why on
earth do you keep telling me that files I have been sent have been blocked
as they were deemed as being unsafe, forcing me to have the file sent again
in exactly the same way, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. This is
utterly bizzar and quite obviously a bug. I have never experienced an MP3
file that has been unsafe. A work around for this? When the message box
appears, before closing it, open the recieving files folder and make a copy
of the file, then okay the message box and the original file will be
deleted. This only ever happens if you attempt to open the file through the
link in the chat window.

In general, file transfer with messenger is a huge stream of bugs,
probably the most unreliable part of messenger.

Any thoughts on this would be cool.

Nick.

Re: Sending a file in Live Messenger

Greetings Nick,

There's lots of things going on when you send a file. For instance, Messenger tries to send
a thumbnail to the user (the exact same way it sends custom emoticons, voiceclips, etc.).
Until that thumbnail is transmitted to you to your contact, they won't see the request.
There isn't any copying to random locations or redirection of files to random servers though.

This is actually a Windows 'feature'. To turn it off, download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/extfix.reg

You'll then be able to receive MP3s unconstrained.

Re: Sending a file in Live Messenger

Hey Jonathan,

Okay, I understand but that's still a long pause to send such a small
amount of data. it can literally take 10 minutes or longer for me to be able
to start a file request from the UK to Australia, yet the transfer itself
can run at a respectable speed, much faster than the request transmition.

Cheers for the reg fix! That's going to come in handy.

Nick.
