| | Re: Live Messenger hangs at startup Greetings, ~wave at PA bear~ Poster -- what you're describing is generally a problem with Messenger and a router on your local network. Assuming you do have a router, you may need to either reset it (unplug it and plug back in) and/or upgrading its firmware to the latest version from the router manufacturer. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2008 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <PABearMVP@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:uvKgTVUgIHA.1188@xxxxxx Quote: > Forwarded to Windows Live Messenger-specific newsgroup via crosspost. > > On the web: > http://www.microsoft.com/communities...live.messenger > > In your newsreader: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...live.messenger > -- > ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) > MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 > AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net > DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ > > charlieannear wrote: Quote: >> Hi I bought a new laptop last summer, and immediately had difficulties in >> getting MSN Messenger to run on it. >> It's an Asus F3SV with Vista Ultimate. >> I would install Messenger, it would seem to install successfully, but would >> hang at startup, and I would have to uninstall it again. >> Afer waiting for a few weeks, I tried again, and it worked properly. >> Several times since then though, Messenger develops a problem where it >> 'hangs' at startup. | | Re: Live Messenger hangs at startup Apologies for posting in the wrong area... obvious now! ![]() Yes, I do have a home network, and this latest episode of messenger hanging-ness coincides with me having to reset my router (back to factory settings actually )Surely if I turn the router off (or remove the laptop from the network) I should be able to install messenger and have it start up on the laptop unimpeded... or am I being naive? I tried installing and running with the laptop plugged into the cable modem, with the router turned off- no joy. I have had messenger running fine on this laptop, off this router up until Friday evening, however, over the last 9 months I've had several instances of this happening. Previously I've been able to do a system restore to quickly get back on track, but this time, inexplicably, I had no restore points on my system, even though I saw one being created only a couple of days previously... As a sage once said... "Bloody computers!" I note from tinternet seaches that this has been a common theme in Messenger's life (although I've been using messenger for years and years and only noticed it on my current setup). Last time I was in this situation, I left it for a few weeks and tried again. It worked, perhaps suggesting that whatever log-jam Messenger is hitting had been dispersed. Perhaps by running tune up from Windows Live One Care? Or simply that several restarts with no installs in between had got things in order internally? Or again, just me being naive... Can anyone tell me what Messenger is trying to achieve at the point that it hangs? i.e what is it trying to find/connect with? What I find most surprising is that I can't shut it down with Task Manager, and it even stops the machine from shutting down (a few times I have left it at 'shutting down' all night to check) Thanks for your help, Charlie "Jonathan Kay [MVP]" wrote: Quote: > Greetings, > > ~wave at PA bear~ > > Poster -- what you're describing is generally a problem with Messenger and a router on your > local network.
