| | Re: cant install newest version of live messenger??? Greetings Barry, What you'll need to do is remove the bits of the old install in the registry. To do so, download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup tool: http://tinyurl.com/42ul9 More documentation can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 It's pretty simple to use though. After the cleanup utility is installed (yes, more installing), head over to Program Files\Windows Installer Cleanup and run the msicuu executable. You'll be prompted with a list of installed products, including Messenger. Just select Windows Live Messenger and choose Remove. Now you should be able to install the latest. If you'd like a direct link to the latest version, you can grab it here (avoiding the Live Installer stuff): http://get.live.com/messenger/config -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2008 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "barry" <barry@xxxxxx> wrote in message news 9895DFD-7396-42FC-B1E1-F7B3FA28D09C@xxxxxxQuote: > i tried to sign in today and i get the message must update to new version to > continue so i proceed with updating during updating to the newest version > it tells me it could not update because it could not remove the old version > so i go in and try to uninstall the old version wont uninstall i try to > delete the old version manually no change i download a file shredder and > shred the file its not there anymore but the program is still installed in > my add remove programs window and is unremovable i do a restoreto a previous > point to recover the program to its pre shredded state and im still unable to > do anything with it ive used registry cleaners to clean the registry it only > tells me the patch file is corrupt or not there |
