| | Download installer from http://get.live.com in different languages When will Microsoft learn that people living in a specific country don't always want to have every software they install in their language. If you set your Internet Explorer to for example the Dutch language, everything I try to install will be in Dutch. In the past when you wanted to download MSN Messenger you had at least the opportunity on the main page to select a language, now you are forced to download the Dutch package unless you extract the download link and replace the "nl" by "en". Everyday I am getting sick and tired of these Microsoft products and yes I understand that there are some dumb people out there using computers that Microsoft wants to help but what about the more advanced users? IMHO Windows is turning into a product for the first group of people and you are pushing away the people that have been using computers for years. Another example is where I bought a subscription of Windows Live OneCare and the Photo backup. As an advanced user I want to specify which directories to include in the backup schedule. Apparently Microsofts vision is to help the dumb users out there by backing up all images on all your drives and you must exclude the directories you don't want backed up. Seriously Microsoft start making products for the advanced group of people as well because not everybody will stay a computer newbie for ever. I want to have full control over my system and I don't want Microsoft to tell me how I should use my computer! |

| | Re: Download installer from http://get.live.com in different languages Greetings Gabriel, Part of the petition (http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com...BDA1!680.entry) made last month to Microsoft was to bring back the true installers to the Microsoft Download Center, thereby allowing a language selection of whatever you desired when you selected what to download. Just to note though that the web installer is on the Download Center and does allow you to select the language you prefer: http://microsoft.com/downloads/detai...5-0487bd5e84ef (see Change language option). Mind you, that's just for Messenger. I've also given up on Microsoft backup tools since NTbackup was dropped for the exact same reason. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2008 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Gabriel Lozano-Moran" <GabrielLozanoMoran@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:B722A250-047A-41F4-90D7-AC3EB0438E1B@xxxxxx Quote: > When will Microsoft learn that people living in a specific country don't > always want to have every software they install in their language. | | Re: Download installer from http://get.live.com in different languages Hi, Having been on the development side of where IP geolocating has been proposed, I can give you a few reasons why we keep seeing this over and over. The first is that it looks great on paper -- it solves the discovery problem (people in the localized countries not finding their version), issues like getting people to click on their flag, translation of country names or language names (without insulting any one therein) and similar problems like that. The second is that it tests well. You bring in 10 people from one of the countries in question and you have them test it. It shows everything in their language, searches in their language, etc. and it all happens automatically. All 10 of them score it high. Lastly and naturally, it's far easier to target advertising and therefore increase revenues. The only problem of course is that small group of people who fall through the cracks (tourists, foreign workers and students, people wanting to search other countries and other languages, downloading applications for significant others with another culture background and stuff like that). The best solution is just to have both, and I have no idea why some of these larger properties (Microsoft, Google, etc.) can't have manual switches for this sort of thing in the corner. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2008 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Sulasno" <sulasnoXXX@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:upVPaXijIHA.4908@xxxxxx Quote: > I really wish Google read this post too; > > Why does Google checks my IP and insists that I search in the Country's language instead of > English? :-) > > > "Gabriel Lozano-Moran" <GabrielLozanoMoran@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:B722A250-047A-41F4-90D7-AC3EB0438E1B@xxxxxx Quote: >> When will Microsoft learn that people living in a specific country don't >> always want to have every software they install in their language. Just goes in "Preferences" and select default language. The issue is that everyone who use that browser again will find Google in language previous selected by you.
