Vista - technical difficulties

messenger signs in but when I try to open a window to talk to a contact on my
list, it says that messenger is experiencing techinical difficulties and has
to close.

I too am having the same problems as Meg, along with the same message about
experiencing technical difficulties. Have uninstalled and re-installed only
to have the same thing happen.
This is why I came here, hoping for an answer/solution. I have moved my
contacts to another IM because of this and it's been going on now for a week.

I got Windows Live Messenger 8.1 running now, but still having issues with
8.5. Have a message saying "newer version", learn more... Finally stopped
clicking on that because it still gives me the same error message.
experiencing technical difficulties. How can I get &.5, without this error
message?
