can't get webcam to work?

I am on Vista Enterprise and Messenger 2008 Build 8.5.1302.1018.

I am able to chat with people fine, but I am unable to share or view webcam.
I can accept and hear voice clips. If I look at the webcam setup, I can
"see" myself, etc. So I think my webcam is ok. But when I share or try and
accept someone else sharing, it first says it is loading, then says waiting
to connect and just spins and spins.

I am at work behind a firewall. Is webcam using a different port or doing
something different that the rest of messenger functionality (or at least
basic chat and voice recording sharing) isn't? I'm not sure if I can share
files or not.

Is there a setting I can change to try and get around a firewall issue?

OH... I AM able to see someone elses webcam when I'm home, so I am fairly
certain this is a firewall port kind of issue. (I have not tried to share my
webcam from home yet.) Just wondering since I can do other things in chat if
there is just a setting I'm missing to help with Firewall issues.

Thank you for your help!

Re: can't get webcam to work?

Greetings,

Webcam connection is separate from file transfer and voice clips -- it can't operate on the
standard server connection so any proxy or firewall can block it and cause it to not
function.

I assume you're at work or something? If so, then there probably isn't much you can do.
Messenger automatically tries a direct connection and then a relay (although obviously if the
relay is being blocked, then it's a no-go).
