Creating custom emoticons in Windows Live Messenger

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, if not please
let me know. In Windows Live Messenger I try to create custom emoticons using
pics from Clip Art Organiser but when I'm asked to "Find Image" I am unable
to locate my Clip Art Organiser containing pictures that I've downloaded from
Clip Art. I've tried everything but no luck. I contacted a Clip Art
discussion group but was told to contact a Messenger group instead! Any
assistance would be gratefully received even if it is to say that I cannot do
what I'm trying to do - at least then I'll know and I can then give up!!
Thank you.

Re: Creating custom emoticons in Windows Live Messenger

Greetings,

I assume you mean the Organizer from Microsoft Office applications -- you actually can use
all the types used in this application as Messenger emoticons. However, you need to know the
exact path to the image in question.

To do so, open up the organizer however you normally do and find an image. Hover over it and
click the arrow that shows up, then choose Preview/Properties. In the window that pops up
after that, look at the bottom for the 'File'. Either make note of it, or even select and
copy (using Ctrl-C -- right-clicking won't work here).

Next go into the Messenger emoticon dialog, click Add and use the file specified in the
previous dialog (or just Paste it there). You'll then be able to use it as an emoticon.

Re: Creating custom emoticons in Windows Live Messenger

Additionally, the Microsoft Clip Organizer default folder for graphics is
located within your "My Documents" folder, being named "Microsoft Clip
Organizer". As the files therein only have ID-like names not referring to
any keywords or tagging, it is of course better to locate the item you want
to import in Messenger, within the Clip Organizer application, as Jonathan
suggested.

Just in case you'd need direct access to all your Clip Organizer image files
=)

Re: Creating custom emoticons in Windows Live Messenger

I've just tried and still can't get it to work. I save the file name and then
go to Live Messenger, click Tools, Emoticons, Create (there is no "Add"
option), then in the box next to "Find Image" when I try to paste the file
name a drop down appears with 3 options highlighted. They are "right to left
reading order", "show unicode control characters" and "insert unicode control
characters". Next to the last one is an arrow and another drop down with
about 20 options! I have no idea what any of them mean.

Re: Creating custom emoticons in Windows Live Messenger

Hi,

Great, you're in the right place. You just need to paste the filename in the File name field
in the 'Select a custom emoticon' window that appears when you click Find Image, and then
click the Open button. Also, you could just navigate over to that folder as you would a
normal file.

However be aware that Messenger does support the WMF format (which Microsoft uses for a good
percentage of clipart), it won't immediately be listed in that dialog window if you're just
browsing -- so just pasting the filename directly in still the best idea.

Here's a screenshot showing exactly what I mean:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/screens/custemot.png
All I need to do here is click the Open button and then fill out the rest of the emoticon
dialog behind it (the name of the emoticon and key to use) and I've got my emoticon!

Re: Creating custom emoticons in Windows Live Messenger

Hi.
YAY!!! IT WORKED!!! Thank you so much, I've been trying to get that sorted
for days! In the "select a custom emoticon" window I now have ALL of the pics
that were in my Clip Art organiser but I can go through them and delete the
ones I don't want to keep. You're brilliant!! Wish I had a direct contact
line straight to you!!! Thanks again - if I could, I'd kiss you!
Karen.
