| | Can't Open Messenger All of the Sudden Whenever I try to open Messenger, I get the pop up box that says: Windows Live Messenger has stopped working. I saw several posts about this from a year ago February and such, so there may be a fix, but I have not found it. I tried reinstalling, running as an administrator, installing an old version of messenger and anything else offered as a solution. If anyone else can shed some light, it would be appreciated. Thanks. |

| | Re: Can't Open Messenger All of the Sudden Hi let-la, Easy to fix and very straightforward. First, uninstall all components of Windows Live Messenger. They are: Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Sign-in Assistant and Windows Live Installer. And reboot the computer. Next, use Explore and go to each \Temp Folder and delete all files and sub-folders. Any file that is needed will be recreated by the program that needs it. Your \Temp Folders are located in \Local Settings\Temp and \Windows\Temp. Next run Disk Cleanup and make sure to check all, except for the Indexer. Then Schedule a Chkdsk /r (Both Options checked.) to run at boot and reboot to run. Run your Registry Cleaner. Reboot and reinstall Windows Live Messenger from a fresh download. -- thecreator "let-la" <let-la@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:B059CE92-79B2-40BA-8627-55B36D37194D@xxxxxx Quote: > Whenever I try to open Messenger, I get the pop up box that says: Windows > Live Messenger has stopped working. | | Re: Can't Open Messenger All of the Sudden Thanks for the help. I uninstalled and deleted everything in the windows/temp folder, but i cannot find the local settings/temp folder. Also, can you explain the disk cleanup, chkdsk/r and registry cleaner for me too? Thanks. I'm running Vista. | | Re: Can't Open Messenger All of the Sudden Hi let-la, I am not running Vista, but have used the Vista Ultimate RC2 and previous to that. C:\Documents and Settings\UserIDs\Local Settings\Temp You need to be able to view Hidden Files and Folders. Open Explore. Click Tools then click Folder Options. Click View then Dot Show Hidden Files and Folders. Click Apply then OK. For Disk Cleanup, several ways to access it, but after clicking Start, click My Computer. Locate your Local Drive and right-click on the Drive and click Properties. On the General Tab, find Disk Cleanup. On the Tools Tabs, find under Error-checking, Check Now. Click Check Now. Check both options. Click Start and answer Yes to Schedule. Reboot to run. For Registry Cleaner, I use TuneUp Utilities 2007, but 2008 is out. http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ -- thecreator "let-la" <letla@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:B0D3914A-C15E-4614-A24F-0A54FC9F3A70@xxxxxx Quote: > Thanks for the help. | | Re: Can't Open Messenger All of the Sudden creator- Thanks for the help, again. After working on it for a few hours, I was able to get messenger working. But it threw off other things, like firefox sometimes wouldn't run and I cannot get sound on my laptop at all. After shutting down for the night and restarting this morning, messenger is giving me the same message and not opening. I uninstalled all three components of Windows Live I deleted the windows\temp file. I did not delete the local settings\temp file because I could not find it. C:\Documents and Settings is not an option under my C Drive here on Vista. I did a disk clean up. I set up an error check. I restarted and the error check ran. I downloaded the trial version of Tuneup Utilities 2008 and cleaned the registry. I restarted. Messenger worked until the next shutdown, now I'm back to square one but I still can't get sound. | | Re: Can't Open Messenger All of the Sudden Hi let-la, First never delete the "windows\temp" file, just delete all files not in use and the Sub-folders of \temp. From the Windows XP Viewpoint, open Explore. Click Tools. Click Folder Options. Click View. Locate "Hidden files and folders". Dot "Show hidden files and folders" Click Apply. Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)". Click Apply then click OK. For Sound, Open Control Panel. Click Classic View. Locate Sound and Open Sound. Check the settings in all tabs. Would you like to try Remote Assistance? If so, add creator_xuxa@xxxxxx . -- thecreator "let-la" <letla@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:B6AEB380-9FD1-495B-B37C-108FD9B7DD22@xxxxxx Quote: > creator- > > Thanks for the help, again. > > After working on it for a few hours, I was able to get messenger working. > But it threw off other things, like firefox sometimes wouldn't run and I > cannot get sound on my laptop at all.
