Windows Messenger doesn't appear to sign in

I recently installed windows 2008 messenger on a computer with 32 bit vista
ultimate. The program installed but when I try to sign in it does not work.
The two icons continue to rotate and I do not get any additional screen
capabilities. A friend of mine says he sees me log on but the icons keep
twirling. If I cancel the log in my friend says that it shows me as off line.
When he says I am on my screen does indicate any additional screens(just the
twirling icons). If I try to log in using an erroneous password it comes back
with error message 80048821 so it must be communicating with something. I
have an MSN home page and do not have any trouble using it and can log on to
it with no problems.
I seem to be able to pass all of the tests that appear on various screens.
This is the third day of trying to get this to work. It sure is nice when
computers work for you instead of vice versa.
I have already removed and reinstalled. So far approximately 10-15 hours of
lost time.
