Network ports

Is there a way to narrow down the ports that need to be opened? From what I
have read, you need to open ports 5004 through 65535. The use will be for
video conferencing.

AFAIK, Windows Messenger uses random ports. Aside from passing through the
entire range of ports (routers don't "open" ports, they just forward
unsolicited packets to designated ports), Windows Live Messenger, in
particular, is capable of controlling router ports via UPnP; if you are
willing to accept the risk that malicious script on web sites you visit
would also be able to control your router ports.
