Vista - Can't sign in to Messenger 8

Every time I try to sign into Messenger 8 (NOT 8.5, the older version which I
like better), a dialog box comes up saying "A newer version is available. You
must install the newer version to continue. Would you like to do this now?"

This may seem self-explanatory, but the dialog box has been popping up like
that for almost 2 years and for almost 2 years I have clicked "no," clicked
"sign in" again, and have been signed in with no problem. Only, a few days
ago, for the first time in a couple years, after I click "no" and then try to
sign in again, it just comes up with the same question and won't let me sign
in.

Has Microsoft changed something in the last few days that is finally
preventing me from signing into Messenger 8?

I have been experiencing this same problem and today I was not able to get in
at all. I am getting error code 81000395
This is happening on both of my computers. does anyone have a fix?
