Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Application Sharing

After downloading/installing Windows Live Messenger 8.1 using HotMail
accounts for the Windows Live ID's & starting a Call to a Computer, I
attempted to use Application Sharing & received an error message that
Application Sharing was not installed or disabled.
Any idea how to enable Application Sharing for Windows Live Messenger 8.1
that was downloaded from the Microsoft web site?

Re: Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Application Sharing

Greetings JVF,

You need Windows Messenger 5.1 installed as well (that's what the error message is
complaining about, incorrectly).

After that's installed, it should work in Windows Live Messenger 8.1.

Re: Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Application Sharing

DO NOT INSTALL 5.1.

I installed it, and I'm now looking at my monitor at 800x600 in safe mode with networking. My Vista (x64 Business SP1) went into a nasty reboot cycle, where I'd login and it keeps saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute". The 5.1 uninstaller didn't work. I'm trying to kill it manually now. I'll try and post again if I get vista back under control, hopefully Windows 7 is Vista + Stability.

Re: Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Application Sharing

Greetings,

The only Messenger 5.1 version is Windows Messenger 5.1 which is not compatible with Vista,
although it shouldn't cause any real harm bypassing any compatibility warnings.

I suggest you do a system restore. To do so, put in the original Vista disc and boot off it.
Once the installer starts, click 'Repair my computer' and follow the instructions.
