why am i appearing offline to all my contacts even when i have my status as
online? i've tried restarting my computer but it made no difference.
how do i fix this?

Are you sure you don't have both Windows and Live messenger installed? they behave differently. There is also the option to "appear" offline, even though you are not... check that as well.
